The Senior Solution Designer – Core Banking is responsible for the end-to-end design of technology solutions within the Core Banking domain. This is a senior leadership role that requires deep expertise across both mature mainframe platforms and modern distributed technologies (REST APIs, microservices, micro-frontends, Java), with the ability to lead solution design across the full technology stack. This role involves working closely with business stakeholders, enterprise architects, subject matter experts, developers, and other technology teams to bridge the gap between business requirements and technical execution — ensuring scalable, secure, and performant outcomes that support Westpac's technology strategy and modernisation agenda.
Key responsibilities include:
- Solution Design and Architecture: Design end to end solutions that span both mainframe (COBOL, CICS, DB2, JCL, IMS) and modern technology stacks (Java/Spring Boot, REST/GraphQL APIs, micro-frontends, containerised services).
- Technical Leadership: Lead design workshops, architecture reviews, and present solutions to Solution Review Boards and Architecture Design Authorities for endorsement.
- Modernisation and Strategic Thinking: Drive the progressive modernisation of core banking platforms by identifying opportunities to decouple, refactor, or re-platform legacy components using API layers and micro-frontend architectures.
- Risk Governance and Delivery Support: Identify and manage technical risks, dependencies, and impacts on legacy systems or shared services.
You’ll bring substantial experience designing enterprise-scale technology solutions within complex, hybrid environments, with the confidence to operate across both legacy and modern platforms. A strong understanding of banking systems and the ability to translate business needs into practical, well-architected solutions is essential. You’ll also bring strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence across multidisciplinary teams and explain complex technical concepts to non-technical and senior stakeholders. A pragmatic, analytical approach and experience navigating competing priorities in large enterprises are key.
Essential experience includes:
- Extensive background in solution design and engineering roles within large, complex organisations
- Proven experience designing solutions across mainframe technologies (COBOL, CICS, DB2, IMS, batch processing) and modern distributed architectures (Java/Spring Boot, APIs, microservices, containers)
- Strong knowledge of banking domains, including payments, lending, account origination and regulatory reporting
- Deep understanding of architectural and integration patterns, such as API-led connectivity, event-driven architecture and domain-driven design
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP) and cloud-native design principles
- Familiarity with micro-frontend architectures and modern UI integration patterns
- Comfortable working in Agile delivery environments with CI/CD and DevOps practices
Desirable experience includes:
- TOGAF or equivalent architecture certification
- AWS or Azure Solutions Architect certification
- Experience with core banking modernisation or migration programmes
- Familiarity with Australian banking regulatory requirements (APRA, AML/CTF)
- Special offers on banking products and discounts from top brands, including generous employee-only mortgage rates!
- Flexible work arrangements to help you achieve a greater work/life balance, and a variety of leave options including Culture, Lifestyle and Wellbeing leave.
- Tailored learning and development opportunities to help your grow your career within the bank.
- Lots of opportunities to ‘give back’ to the Community by getting involved in our many volunteering initiatives.
