Position Summary:
Through on-the-ground restoration and community stewardship projects, Alaska Youth Stewards (AYS), an employment program for rural and Indigenous youth, aims to provide youth from rural Southeast Alaska with well-supported pathways to becoming empowered and responsible leaders who contribute to our region’s cultural vibrancy, economic prosperity, and ecological resilience.
Essential Functions:
- Work Ethic: Demonstrating dependability, timeliness, and professionalism
- Monitoring and Reporting: Collecting environmental data for Tribal, community and partner projects
- Community Support & Outreach: Leading and participating in community events and sharing out AYS project work throughout the summer
- Physical Labor: Hiking long distances, carrying heavy equipment, and potential wilderness camping
- Teamwork & Collaboration: Working constructively with other crew members and collaborators, and following instructions from crew leads
- Traditional Harvesting: Participating in harvesting, processing and sharing of traditional foods for community members
- Maintenance & Construction: Clearing trails, building structures like bridges or boardwalks, and revitalizing habitat while taking care of and maintaining all tools, gear and equipment
- Safety Compliance: Operating hand tools safely, using personal protective equipment (PPE), dressing appropriately for the weather and mitigating risks daily
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Basic technical and digital literacy, including use of Microsoft 365 and other tools for documentation, scheduling, and communication.
- Safety practices in outdoor or operational environments.
- Cultural respect, professionalism, and Tribal values.
- Yakutat, Yaakwdaat Tlingit culture, or Southeast Alaska ecosystems.
Skills in:
- Time management and prioritizing and organizing work.
- Problem solving.
- Interpersonal relations and customer service.
- Strong safety awareness, particularly in outdoor, field‑based environments.
- Field readiness and adaptability, including comfort working outdoors in variable weather conditions and adjusting plans as conditions change.
Ability to:
- Clearly communicate, both verbal and written, with the ability to work effectively with youth, families, Tribal staff, leadership, and external partners.
- Have a collaborative mindset.
- Work independently and prioritize workload.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Seasonal variation in workload, including physically demanding outdoor work during summer months.
Fieldwork in variable weather conditions.
Occasional evenings or weekend work during peak season or special events.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility:
This is an entry-level position that reports to the AYS Program Coordinator. This position has no supervisory or managerial responsibilities.

- Must be 14 years of age or older.
