Job Title: Chief Revenue Officer (CRO)

Reports To: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Position Type: Full-Time

Organization Overview

Charity Navigator is a 501(c)(3) organization that makes impactful giving easier for all with the nation’s largest, most comprehensive charity evaluation tool. The organization helps donors easily identify U.S.-registered charities making a difference on the issues they care about most while helping charities better understand their donors, deliver on impact, increase awareness, and build trust. We are seeking a dynamic Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) to help us establish new lines of earned revenue as well as oversee and scale our existing fundraising functions.

Position Summary

The Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) will be a key member of the executive team, responsible for driving the organization’s revenue strategy, ensuring financial sustainability, and leading growth initiatives. The CRO will have oversight of the established traditional development channels run by the SVP of Development. The major focus of this role will be in the entrepreneurial spirit of creating and managing new revenue channels through our API, List Sales, Causeway Funds, Alerts, Giving Basket and more, with a goal of $2M annually. The CRO will work closely with our Chief Product and Technology Officer. This role requires a strategic thinker with exceptional leadership skills, and a proven track record in revenue generation in both business to consumer and business to business engagements. Experience in fundraising is a plus. 

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership:

    • Develop and implement a comprehensive revenue strategy aligned with the organization’s mission and goals.

    • Identify and cultivate new revenue streams, including earned income opportunities and innovative funding models working closely with the Chief Product & Technology Officer. 

    • Supervise fundraising team in creating and executing annual and long-term fundraising plans, including individual donors, mid-level donors, major gifts, corporate partnerships, grants, and more. 

  • Business Development and Earned Revenue:

    • Develop and execute a comprehensive business development strategy aligned with the company’s overall objectives and growth targets.

    • Identify new market opportunities, industry trends, and potential partnerships to drive the expansion of earned revenue.

    • Conduct thorough market research and analysis to evaluate the competitive landscape and identify key differentiators.

    • Lead the business development initiative by identifying and pursuing new business opportunities, including new markets, products, and customer segments.

    • Build and nurture relationships with key stakeholders, clients, and partners to establish strategic alliances, as well assecure, retain, and grow new business deals.

    • Drive the entire sales cycle, from prospecting and lead generation to negotiation and deal closure.

  • Donor Relations and Stewardship:

    • With the SVP of Development, oversee donor engagement and stewardship strategies, ensuring strong relationships with key supporters and stakeholders.

    • Work closely with the CEO, SVP of Development and Board of Directors to engage high-net-worth individuals, foundations, and corporations.

  • Team Leadership and Development:

    • Manage, mentor, and grow a high-performing revenue team, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, optimization, and collaboration.

    • Set performance metrics and regularly evaluate team and individual performance.

  • Financial Planning and Analysis:

    • Collaborate with the CFO and SVP of Development to set revenue targets and forecast financial outcomes.

    • Monitor and analyze revenue performance, providing regular updates to the CEO and Board of Directors.

  • Marketing and Communications Alignment:

    • Work closely with the marketing and communications team to ensure fundraising and revenue generation efforts are effectively communicated and aligned with the organization’s brand and messaging.

  • Board and Executive Collaboration:

    • Serve as a key liaison to the Board’s fundraising and development committees.

    • Present revenue reports and updates to the Board of Directors and senior leadership team.

Qualifications
  • Experience:

    • Minimum of 10 years of experience in sales, marketing, or development with assigned yearly revenue targets. At least 5 years in a senior leadership role taking new products to market. 

    • Proven track record of establishing new business relationships and maintaining them over time.

    • Experience in fundraising is a plus.

    • Experience managing and mentoring teams, with a demonstrated ability to build and lead high-performing teams.

  • Skills:

    • Exceptional strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think creatively and innovatively about revenue opportunities.

    • Strong financial acumen, with experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

    • Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners.

    • Experience with web-based products and services; e-commerce experience a plus

Compensation and Benefits: 

  • Salary Range: $180,000 – $225,000 with opportunities for performance-based bonuses based on fundraising achievements and meeting established goals.
