Job Summary
Responsible for processing specimens for pathologic diagnosis, including tissue fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and slide preparation for microscopic examination. Ensures accurate and timely preparation of surgical, cytology, and other pathology specimens while supporting quality patient care and laboratory operations. Maintains laboratory equipment, supplies, and quality control processes in compliance with organizational policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
Essential Functions
Registers, orders, and accessions pathology specimens into laboratory information systems.
Performs specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, routine histologic staining, special staining, frozen section preparation, cover slipping, and handling of surgical, body fluid, and irreplaceable tissue specimens.
Prepares slides and specimens for pathologist review and microscopic examination.
Processes and prepares specimens for research requests in accordance with established procedures.
Transports specimens to and from collection sites while maintaining specimen integrity and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Performs special staining procedures as assigned and maintains appropriate quality control documentation.
Maintains staining solutions, reagents, supplies, and related laboratory materials.
Assists pathologists with frozen section preparation and specimen collection procedures, including Fine Needle Aspirations.
May prepare cytology specimens and perform Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing as permitted by location, training, and certification requirements.
Operates automated histology equipment according to laboratory procedures and manufacturer guidelines.
Performs routine equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality assurance activities as assigned.
Maintains laboratory inventory and ensures appropriate stocking of supplies.
Handles biological specimens, chemicals, and hazardous materials in accordance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
Follows established laboratory safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment, hand hygiene, chemical handling, and hazardous waste management.
Maintains compliance with federal, state, accreditation, and organizational regulations and standards.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of histology principles and laboratory practices related to specimen processing and diagnosis.
Ability to prepare tissue specimens accurately to support patient diagnosis and treatment.
Ability to perform complex histologic procedures, analyze results, and maintain laboratory instrumentation.
Knowledge of specimen handling processes from accessioning through storage and retention.
Knowledge of medical terminology and pathology laboratory practices.
Knowledge of laboratory safety requirements, regulatory standards, and quality assurance principles.
Knowledge of contemporary histology techniques and best practices.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Basic computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Technical expertise in specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, histologic staining, cover slipping, and specimen handling.
Ability to assist with frozen section preparation and related pathology procedures.
Ability to operate automated histology equipment according to established laboratory procedures.
Ability to utilize laboratory information systems and other technology platforms accurately and efficiently.
Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with pathologists, laboratory staff, providers, and other customers.
Ability to read, interpret, and apply written instructions, technical information, and numerical data.
Ability to exercise sound judgment while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with applicable regulations.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and accuracy.
Ability to organize work effectively and prioritize assignments in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Associate Degree preferred.
Field of Study
Associate Degree in a laboratory science, chemical science, biological science, medical laboratory technology, or related field preferred.
Completion of clinical laboratory technology training from an accredited institution preferred.
Successful completion of an official United States military medical laboratory procedures training program and qualifying laboratory experience may be considered.
Individuals who qualified and served as high-complexity testing personnel under applicable CLIA requirements may also qualify in accordance with current regulatory standards.
Work Experience
One year of technical experience as a Histology Technician or Histology Technologist in a histology laboratory preferred.
Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT-ASCP) preferred.
Histotechnician (HT-ASCP) preferred.
