Albany County Road & Bridge is seeking a skilled Fleet Mechanic to assist in maintaining and repairing a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment. The County's fleet includes pickups, SUVs, sheriff and county vehicles, dump trucks, semi-trucks, trailers, motor graders, loaders, excavators, and other road maintenance equipment.

We are seeking a dependable, safety-minded individual with strong mechanical aptitude and experience working on automotive and fleet vehicles. Experience with heavy trucks and construction equipment is preferred but not required for the right candidate. The successful applicant must be willing to learn and work on a wide variety of equipment as part of a team responsible for keeping County operations running safely and efficiently.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, maintain, and repair light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections and scheduled service work.
  • Diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Repair and maintain braking, steering, suspension, driveline, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic systems.
  • Utilize diagnostic software, scan tools, service manuals, and computerized repair information systems.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and minor machining as necessary.
  • Build and repair hydraulic hoses and fittings.
  • Maintain accurate work orders, maintenance records, and inventory records.
  • Assist with parts ordering and inventory management.
  • Operate County vehicles and equipment to inspect, test, and verify repairs.
  • Respond to occasional field repairs and emergency maintenance situations.
  • Assist equipment operators with preventive maintenance practices and equipment inspections.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop and work environment.
  • Work cooperatively with the Lead Mechanic and Road & Bridge staff to prioritize repairs and maintain fleet readiness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Lead Mechanic in support of departmental and County operations.



Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a vocational, technical, or trade school program in automotive, diesel, or heavy equipment repair is preferred.
  • Experience performing automotive, fleet, diesel, or heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems and perform repairs with minimal supervision.
  • Working knowledge of modern vehicle diagnostic equipment and computerized systems.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 75 pounds and perform the physical demands associated with vehicle and equipment maintenance, including standing, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing, and working in confined spaces.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working on heavy trucks, trailers, construction equipment, or road maintenance equipment.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • Hydraulic troubleshooting and repair experience.
  • ASE certifications or equivalent technical training.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems and electronic work orders.



Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a maintenance shop environment with occasional outdoor work in varying weather conditions. Duties may involve lifting heavy objects, operating tools and equipment, exposure to noise, dust, grease, fuels, and other maintenance-related materials. Occasional overtime and emergency response may be required.

 

Additional Information

Employees are expected to provide their own standard mechanic hand tools. Albany County provides specialty tools, diagnostic equipment, shop equipment, and other necessary resources.
