Job Summary:
Serves as a manager of the environmental health field program and acts as an expert resource to other sanitarians. This position issues permits for commercial/residential wells, septic systems, soil erosion and sedimentation control, food and in the County to enforce Federal, State and County sanitation and environmental health laws to safeguard the public health using the Michigan Department of the Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and County regulations. In addition, this position inspects commercial, residential and public locations in the county to enforce federal, state and county sanitation and environmental health laws to safeguard public health.
Starting Wage: $73,632 annual salary

Responsibilities and Duties:
- Conducts quality assurance analysis on all outgoing permits and inspection reports associated with the water and sewage programs. For the food coordinator, provides quality assurance for food permits, is the certified trainer for the program, and provides reports to the state. This analysis is conducted based on the minimum program requirements outlined in the accreditation requirements.
- Serves as content expert for advanced residential sites, site condominiums, commercial sites, food establishments, temporary food establishments, and body art establishments. This includes review of plans, coordinating with the customer and stakeholders, issuing a permit, and completing applicable inspections.
- Trains all new staff in the water, sewage, SESC (Soil Erosion & Sedimentation Control), food, and body art programs. This includes technical field skills as well as software and technical writing.
- Conduct performance evaluations with staff utilizing data derived from the quality assurance review process. Coach and discipline staff as appropriate based on job performance.
- Approves timesheets, PTO, conferences, expense reimbursements, and purchase orders for food and field staff.
- Completes water, sewage, and soil erosion reporting to EGLE (quarterly) and to the Allegan County Board of Commissioners Bi-weekly. Data from these reports is accessed through the environmental health service log and Fetch GIS software.
- Assess work assignments and areas of the sanitarians within the field program. These assessments are made based on workload and issuance of permits within the 14-business-day turnaround.
- Review and maintain an awareness of the budget for the Sewage, water, pool, and campground programs.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelors Degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Biology or Chemistry
- Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Registered Sanitarian
- Knowledge of Part 91 Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Program
- Knowledge of the State of Michigan Pool & Campground rules
- Knowledge of the public health accreditation process and familiarity with minimum program requirements for the water and sewage programs.
- Knowledge of Michigan Subsurface Soil Criteria
- Understanding of The ADMIN. RULES governing ON-SITE WATER SUPPLY AND SEWAGE DISPOSAL FOR LAND DIVISIONS AND SUBDIVISIONS were created under authority of Michigan's Condominium Act, Act 59 PA 1978 and Michigan's Land Division Act, Act 288
