The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Specialist, Advocacy, Healthy Air Solutions. Working as a member of the Advocacy and Public Policy department, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy.

The Healthy Air Solutions initiative of the American Lung Association is a multifaceted program centered on reducing exposure to the dangerous effects of air pollution by preventing pollution at its sources. Activities focus on increasing understanding of the link between air quality and lung health and expanding the availability and use of cleaner fuel and vehicle technologies.

The Specialist, in partnership with other team members, accomplishes program objectives by implementing events and activities; supporting partners; engaging the public, vehicle fleet operators and key decision makers; implementing innovative and compelling programs; and meeting and evaluating grant deliverables. The work will include balancing diverse responsibilities to ensure program goals and requirements are successfully achieved and on time. The projects are primarily focused in Minnesota, North Dakota, and the surrounding region. This is a grant funded position. 

Responsibilities

  • Work as a central part of the Healthy Air Solutions team assisting to develop, implement, and evaluate public health education programs focused on reducing air pollution through activities that increase the use of electric and other alternative fuel vehicles. 
  • Coordinate aspects of grant projects activities, including implementing educational events, developing educational and marketing materials, and supporting social media efforts.
  • Build, maintain and cultivate relationships in related industry, nonprofit, governmental and community organizations to support program delivery, sustainability and growth.
  • Create content for fact sheets, reports, webpages, social media and other venues.
  • Develop and effectively utilize timelines and work plans to ensure completion of grant deliverables. 
  • Research and implement best practices for air quality programs within priority populations.
  • Actively participate in coalitions identified in the grant projects. 
  • Contribute to quarterly progress reports and monthly reporting of grant activities.
  • Collaborate with the Healthy Air Solutions team in growing programs and accomplishments.
  • Maintain open, routine and effective dialogue with coworkers and project partners and support internal awareness of Healthy Air Solutions team work products.
  • Participate in and support community-related programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental studies, science, public health, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience implementing community awareness, education or other programs related to areas of public health, environmental protection, sustainability or similar fields.
  • Prior experience in public health, community relations and/or issue advocacy (desired). 
  • Must be a self-starter and able to work within occasionally tight timelines. 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Positive attitude with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated success in planning, hosting and managing events. 
  • Willingness to travel periodically for events, meetings and conferences. 
  • Ability to lift/move approximately 25 lbs. when assisting with local events.
  • Able to work with minimum direct supervision, make decisions and take initiative, while maintaining a commitment to teamwork and mutual cooperation.
  • Proven ability to cultivate and steward relationships across a diverse population.
  • Ability to develop/maintain relationships with professionals (fleet, fuel, agency, environmental, health) and members of the public.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including occasional evenings and weekends with some overnights, as needed.
  • Valid Driver’s license is helpful.
  • Software will include Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams and others. Understanding of GIS, Illustrator, and other specialized software is preferred.
