Job Summary
The External Affairs Commission deals with student issues related to advocacy for students on a university, municipal, provincial, and federal level. In this pursuit, the Commission lobbies and advocates internally within the university administration while also lobbying externally to raise awareness about government policies regarding post-secondary education, as well as municipal issues pertaining to student life.

Job Duties
Develop a thorough understanding of important documents and resources related to tenant rights including the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), Community Legal Education Ontario website, and avenues for appeals and addressing grievances
Respond to student inquiries directed to the Housing Resource Centre as required through the summer and academic year
Disseminate information to the student body related to all matters of town-gown relations or housing, including: property standards, house-hunting, move-in and move-out periods, and grievance avenues for conflicts with landlords or issues with property standards, and other issues as necessary
Oversee the Holiday House Check Program and promote and coordinate the program for participating students
Administer the Proactive Property Standards Program in conjunction with the City of Kingston By-Law Enforcement
Assist with student housing-related advocacy initiatives directed at the City of Kingston and relevant stakeholders as delegated by or in collaboration with the Commissioner of External Affairs
Ensure that volunteers and/or employees adhere to all health and safety regulations
Monitor volunteer and/or employee performance to mitigate disciplinary action in accordance with established procedures and notify the Commissioner of any issues that arise
Exhibit a working knowledge of volunteers portfolios while ensuring work is being performed according to established standards
Ensure all student needs are addressed and handled professionally
Assist with new volunteer training by positively reinforcing successful performance and giving respectful and encouraging coaching as needed
Maintain a calm demeanor during periods of high stress
Maintain positive working relationships with relevant stakeholders related to all portfolios
Assist the Commissioner in the development of a goal plan, budget, mid-year review, and any relevant capital expenditure proposals
Coordinate activities with the Senior Manager by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and delegating work accordingly
Participate as an active member on hiring panels to keep the service adequately staffed
Ensure that all employees comply with company policies, procedures, and ethical standards
Attend and fully participate in all in person and virtual meetings
Maintain consistent communication with all relevant stakeholders, responding to e-mails in a timely manner
Complete a thorough transition process with the incoming manager that includes one on one meetings and a transition manual
Complete other duties as assigned
Job Requirements
Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills
Demonstrated time management skills
Ability to identify measures of performance and actions needed to improve or correct performance
Ability to supervise and motivate a team to achieve and exceed their goals
Ability to delegate, set expectations, and monitor progress of all direct reports
Ability to remain calm and poised in urgent situations
