About This Role

The role is responsible for ensuring that machinery is well maintained, contributing to higher uptime and improved equipment reliability. This includes applying the right lubricant at the right time and in the right way to support other maintenance programs, such as predictive maintenance (PDM) and condition-based maintenance (CBM), by reducing the likelihood of failure and extending the lifespan of critical assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the selection, specification, and performance evaluation of lubricants for all plant equipment, in collaboration with lubrication engineers, OEMs, and lubricant suppliers.
  • Develop and maintain lubrication standards, including grease-versus-oil application guidelines, to ensure consistency and best practice across operations.
  • Ensure optimal lubricant selection based on cost efficiency, wear protection, energy conservation, safety, quality requirements, and environmental considerations.
  • Verify lubricant compatibility with equipment, process fluids, operating conditions, and environmental requirements to maximize asset reliability and performance.
  • Establish, document, and maintain lubrication specifications and standards for all approved lubricant products.
  • Lead and implement lubricant consolidation initiatives to reduce inventory complexity, improve lubrication management, and optimize operational costs.
  • Oversee the writing and scheduling of routine lubrication preventive maintenance (PM) tasks, consistent with best practices for each machine, including oil changes, top-ups, grease gun routes, filter changes, and lubrication inspections.
  • Establish lubrication and contamination control guidelines for equipment rebuilders (engines, motors, pumps, gearboxes, etc.).
  • Select and specify automated lubrication systems, including oil mist, single-point, and centralized lubrication technologies, for industrial equipment.
  • Select and specify appropriate lubricant top-up containers and port hardware to support effective lubrication management.
  • Identify and select suitable lubricant dispensing equipment to ensure safe, contamination-free lubricant handling.
  • Select and manage grease fittings, identification tags, and grease guns to support standardized lubrication practices.
  • Determine and procure the storage room tools and equipment necessary for efficient lubricant storage and handling.
  • Establish fluid cleanliness standards and contamination control targets to enhance equipment reliability and performance.
  • Evaluate and select filter suppliers, filter types, and performance specifications in line with operational requirements.
Verify the compatibility of lubricants and additives with filtration and separation systems to ensure optimal equipment performance.
  • Develop and implement supplier performance monitoring and evaluation programs.
  • Monitor, analyze, and communicate supplier performance metrics and recommendations to Purchasing, Engineering, and Management teams.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain lubrication procedures aligned with industry best practices for PM activities and routine maintenance work, including:
    • Tank and sump flushing and cleaning.
    • Oil drain intervals and condition-based oil change criteria.
    • Lubricant top-up procedures.
    • Grease gun calibration and operation.
    • Lubricant handling, storage, and contamination control practices.
    • Equipment lubrication inspections.
    • Filter replacement and used-filter inspections.
    • Greasing frequencies, quantities, and application methods.
  • Support the selection and management of lubrication software and other information technology products/processes, including data entry, oil analysis software, predictive maintenance (PDM) software, lubrication scheduling software, and related computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) modules.
  • Participate in failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) planning initiatives.
Coordinate annual lubrication audits and benchmarking services.
  • Provide data integration and interface to other reliability technology activities including vibration, acoustics and thermography.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Education, Work Experience & Key Competencies

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BSc) or HND in an Engineering discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of 4 years' experience in maintenance and machinery lubrication, preferably within the mining industry.
  • A Certificate of Competency issued by the Mines Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission Certificate is desirable.
  • Training on oil analysis and/or certification for lubrication analyst is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) for maintenance planning, scheduling, asset management, and performance reporting.
  • Strong understanding and practical application of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and other reliability engineering methodologies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of industrial lubricants, including lubricant properties, viscosity selection, additive technologies, and base oil characteristics, with the ability to match lubricants to specific equipment and operating conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and optimize lubrication schedules based on equipment criticality, operating conditions, and reliability requirements.
  • Experience in the use of condition monitoring and predictive maintenance tools, including oil analysis systems, particle counters, thermal imaging cameras, and related diagnostic technologies to assess lubricant condition and equipment health.
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural environment and respect other people values and opinions.
