About This Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end administration, management, and commercial control of contracts associated with open-pit mining operations. The role ensures contractual compliance, maximizes commercial outcomes, mitigates risk, manages claims and variations, and supports operational teams in achieving project and production objectives. The position serves as the primary commercial interface between the company and its subcontractors.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer mining, drilling, blasting, load and haul, civil works, maintenance, equipment hire, and service contracts.
- Monitor contract performance against contractual obligations, KPIs, production targets, and commercial terms.
- Ensure compliance with contract conditions, statutory requirements, and company policies.
- Maintain contract registers, correspondence logs, and document control systems.
- Interpret and communicate contractual obligations to operational teams.
- Manage contract financial performance and identify opportunities to improve profitability.
- Review and validate monthly progress claims, invoices, payment certificates, and rate adjustments.
- Monitor contract budgets, commitments, and forecasts.
- Identify commercial risks and opportunities throughout the contract lifecycle.
- Support the preparation of cost reports and commercial performance analysis.
- Prepare, assess, negotiate, and manage contract variations.
- Develop and maintain claims registers.
- Lead the preparation and submission of extension of time claims, variation requests, and compensation events.
- Evaluate subcontractor and supplier claims.
- Maintain supporting documentation for all contractual claims and disputes.
- Assist in the preparation of tender submissions for mining and civil contracts.
- Review tender documentation, scope of work, commercial schedules, and risk allocations.
- Participate in contract negotiations with clients and subcontractors.
- Support procurement teams in developing contract packages and commercial evaluations
- Identify contractual, commercial, operational, and legal risks.
- Develop and implement mitigation strategies.
- Ensure contractual protections are maintained and enforced.
- Escalate significant contract concerns to management
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, site management, project teams, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Act as the key point of contact for contractual matters.
- Facilitate contract review meetings and commercial discussions.
- Support dispute avoidance and resolution initiatives
- Ensure compliance with contractual obligations, company governance requirements, and applicable legislation.
- Maintain complete and auditable contract files.
- Support internal and external audits.
- Ensure adherence to health, safety, environmental, and community obligations contained within contracts.
- Prepare monthly commercial and contract status reports.
- Report on claims, variations, disputes, contract risks, and performance metrics.
- Provide management with contractual advice and recommendations.
- Contribute to project forecasting and business planning activities.
Education, Work Experience & Key Competencies
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Commerce, Law, Construction Management, Engineering, Mining or a related discipline from a recognized tertiary institution.
- Professional contract management qualification or equivalent experience.
- A postgraduate qualification in Project Management, Finance, Law, or Commerce will be an added advantage
- Minimum 8 years of contract administration and commercial management experience.
- Significant experience within open-pit mining, mining services, civil construction or a similar sector contracting.
- Demonstrated experience managing high-value mining contracts.
- Proven experience with claims, variations, dispute resolution, and commercial negotiations.
- Experience with contract forms such as FIDIC, NEC, or bespoke mining agreements
- Excellent interpersonal, planning and organizational skills with a proven ability to build collaborative working relationships and operate effectively within cross-functional teams.
