What We Offer
~1 min readThe Electrician II performs preventive and corrective maintenance on Electrical systems at the Main Hospital and Satellite Buildings. Perform journeyman level installation, repair, assembly and maintenance of electric motors, circuit breakers, diesel generators, lighting panels and related electronic controls and devices. Participates in the hospital preventive maintenance (PM) program.
This position plays a critical role in supporting Augusta Health’s mission and advancing departmental goals through measurable performance indicators and service excellence. This position contributes to a collaborative, patient-centered environment and helps drive outcomes aligned with organizational priorities.
- Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs a wide variety of electrical systems and fixtures rated at up to 480 volts. Typical tasks include but are not limited to:
- Replaces light bulbs and ballasts.
- Troubleshoots and repairs automatic motor operated doors.
- Troubleshoots and repairs fire alarm systems.
- Troubleshoots and repairs magnetic door holders and electronic locking devices.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance inspections of exit lights and emergency lights.
- Troubleshoots and repairs high voltage (480 volt) electric distribution system panels, motors and transformers.
- Troubleshoots and repairs low voltage control circuits and relays.
- Orders repair parts and supplies and maintains an inventory of on-hand spare parts for critical electrical systems.
- Performs routine inspections and testing of life safety generators and automatic transfer switches.
- Utilizes test equipment and meters, such as amp meters, voltmeters and megohmmeters for localizing electrical equipment malfunctions and faults.
- Installs conduit and pulls wire from motor control centers to new electrical equipment.
- Installs new equipment including but not limited to: electric outlets, lights and sensors.
- Repairs a wide variety of electrical devices and equipment including but not limited to: ovens, ranges, washers, dryers, air compressors, laboratory and other clinical equipment, lighting circuits, HVAC system controls, boiler controls water treatment systems, electric heaters and battery back?up systems.
- Troubleshoots and repairs electrical components installed on blanket warmers, refrigerators, patient beds and stretchers.
- Assembles and replaces conduit fittings, junction boxes, and supports.
- Installs three-phase motors and tests for proper phase rotation.
- Cleans and adjusts electrical contacts, motor control centers and transformers.
- Participates in the hospital preventive maintenance (PM) program.
- Updates the status of assigned work orders on the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and maintains pertinent records to document work completed.
- Assists other maintenance trades with troubleshooting and repairing various mechanical and electrical systems.
- As a member of the Hospital maintenance team, performs a wide variety of routine building maintenance tasks including but not limited to: door hardware repairs, clearing clogged sinks and toilets, laundry department equipment repairs, thermostat repairs, unit heater and fan coil unit repairs, pneumatic tube system repairs, furniture repairs and moving furniture.
- Performs troubleshooting and repairs of electrical control circuits associated with emergency power and HVAC Systems.
- Coordinates the documentation of changes made by in-house electricians and contractors to the electrical distribution system on hospital drawings.
- Assists the Maintenance Supervisor in Planning Electrical System outage work to perform system repairs. This work shall include but not be limited to: ordering repair parts, reviewing lockout/tagout procedures and scheduling contractors to perform work.
- Planning and installing new electric service including new panels, breakers and conduit.
- Assists the Maintenance Supervisor in coordinating the work efforts of various contractors including but not limited to: the diesel generator maintenance contractors, the fire alarm system testing contractor, the fire sprinkler system contractor, the security camera contractor and the parking lot lighting contractor.
- Trains new personnel assigned to the electrical group.
- Provides in-the-field quality assurance checks of contractor electrical repairs and building modifications.
- As part of the Hospital maintenance team, provides after hours call-in support on a rotating schedule basis and comes to work in a timely manner in response to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
- May be required to use hospital vehicles for various reasons (going to supply houses, travel between buildings on the Augusta Health Campus and throughout the county etc.).
- During the winter months, assists with shoveling snow on sidewalks.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements

- Licensure/Certification:
- Must hold a current Electrician License as issued by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) at the Journeyman’s level.
- Underground Storage Tank Operator Training Class C Operator designation recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia within 60 days of hire
- Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years Hospital campus or Industrial / Commercial electrical facility work experience.
- Minimum of two (2) years Healthcare experience with demonstrated advanced electrical troubleshooting and repair experiences with building electrical distribution systems, emergency diesel generators (life safety generators) and UPS batteries.
- Driver's License: Yes
- To drive an Augusta Health Vehicle, must also be 21 years old and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must be approved by Risk Management.
- Eligibility to work in the United States and meet Virginia state employment requirements
Requirements
~1 min read- Education: Formal Electrical Training from a Vocational School or Military Technical School.
- Licensure/Certification: None
- Experience: Acute Healthcare experience as an Electrician.
- Prior experience in a hospital, healthcare system, or related service-oriented environment
- Familiarity with Augusta Health’s systems, workflows, or organizational culture is a plus
- Advanced demonstrated understanding of the Electrical Distribution System and Life Safety Generators.
- O&M of stand-alone electrical systems (lighting, motors, rooftop fans, generators, and kitchen equipment).
- Must be able to work independently.
- Must be able to read blueprints and other technical documentation.
- Must demonstrate good troubleshooting skills on a wide variety of facility electrical and electronic systems including: diesel generators, automatic transfer switches, circuit breakers, lighting controls, kitchen equipment, laundry equipment and batteries.
- Basic computer keyboard skills necessary for sending and receiving e-mails and entering work status updates for assigned work orders.
- Must be able to solder wiring and circuit boards.
- Must be proficient with the use of electrical test equipment including multi?meters and megohmmeters.
- Must be able to bend Electric Metal Tubing (EMT) and thread rigid conduit.
- Must be knowledgeable of Virginia building code requirements as they pertain to electrical systems and the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Must be knowledgeable of electrical safety rules and practices.
- Must be able to climb ladders.

- The Electrician is a team member but is not responsible or accountable for the team’s activities.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations. Cleans work area and shop areas. Tools, equipment, chemicals and supplies are not to be left unattended in patient care areas or other areas where they may injure patients, visitors or employees.
- Work is done in a timely and orderly manner with few complaints or call backs. Patient concerns (patient hospital experience) must be a top priority.
