Health Unit Coordinator I - Emergency Department
Quick Summary
The Emergency Department Health Unit Coordinator is responsible for pre-registering patients into the health information system by obtaining appropriate information from Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to process complete demographic and other visit related information. Responsibilities also include interacting with patients, patient family members/visitors, providers, and other team members.
Requirements
~3 min read- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must possess written and verbal communication skills.
- HIPAA – appropriately manages Protected Health Information (PHI).
- Able to meet physical and mental requirements of position in fast-paced, complex acute care setting.
- Annual education and competencies as required per hospital certifications
- 1-year previous experience in customer service.
- 1-year previous experience in general clerical office or administrative duties experience or applicable classwork may be substituted.
Technical Skills
- Captures and enters accurate patient demographic via direct interaction with EMS. Appropriately identifies each patient using two identifiers.
- Obtains registration information including armband and ensures ED staff receive.
- Request records from other facilities.
- Reviews physician orders for services.
- Responsible for consulting hospitalist, resource clinician, Valley Community Services Board, social work, or a different specific group of physicians as needed for the Emergency Department provider.
- Responsible for registering DOA accounts for nursing supervisor and legal blood alcohol accounts as needed.
- Responsible for printing nursing forms/patient packets when requested.
- Run discharge report daily to ensure that all accounts are discharged appropriately.
- Effectively communicates with nursing staff using Vocera.
- Understands downtime process for entering orders/tests.

- Demonstrates a positive, professional image of caring and concern for patients, family and all other internal and external customers. Maintains composure in difficult situations. Exercises good judgement to resolve patient concerns and/or refers issues to department supervisor/ manager.
- Answer patient call bell as needed and notifies care team.
- Enters call back reminders.
- Enters IT, Maintenance, and Biomed repair requests as needed.
