What We Offer
~1 min readThe Maintenance Mechanic II performs preventive and corrective maintenance on building mechanical and electrical equipment and systems at the main hospital building as well as at satellite facilities. Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs various mechanical systems. Participates in the hospital preventive maintenance (PM) program.
This position plays a critical role in supporting Augusta Health’s mission and advancing departmental goals through measurable performance indicators and service excellence. This position contributes to a collaborative, patient-centered environment and helps drive outcomes aligned with organizational priorities.
- Performs all duties of Maintenance Mechanic I, with increased technical scope and complexity.
- Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs intermediate mechanical and electrical systems at the main hospital and satellite buildings.
- Responds to a wide range of service orders involving:
- Advanced door repairs (electrical locks, closures)
- HVAC filter changes and system support
- Carpentry, patching, installation tasks
- Steam system support: repairing leaks, rebuilding condensate traps, replacing pumps/couplings
- Replacing single-phase motors
- Rooftop fan servicing (belts, bearings, adjustments)
- Repairing medical gas and oxygen leaks
- Inspection and repair of kitchen and laundry equipment
- Troubleshooting of air compressors, dryers, and pumps
- Monitoring pump and motor operations throughout the facility
- Patient equipment repair (beds, stretchers, nurse call systems, warmers)
- Resetting breakers and replacing fuses
- Performing water treatment and monitoring for boiler/steam systems
- Fire safety equipment inspection (extinguishers, exit signs)
- Monitoring building automation and fire alarm systems from the Plant Operations Control Room
- Boiler room duties, including water sampling, softener maintenance, and log keeping
- Troubleshoots and repairs intermediate utility systems, including:
- Water pumps
- Plant air compressors and dryers
- Medical vacuum systems
- Hot water heaters and boiler combustion controls
- Disassembles and aligns motors and pumps
- Troubleshoots and performs minor repairs on hospital vehicles, lift gates, and snowblowers
- Assists other trades and contractors as needed
- Maintains safe and clean working conditions; ensures tools and supplies are secured properly
- Completes work efficiently, with a focus on patient satisfaction
- Participates in the after-hours on-call rotation and responds promptly to urgent needs
- Operates hospital vehicles for supply runs and inter-facility support
- Assists with snow removal during inclement weather
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements

- Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years Hospital campus or commercial / industrial mechanical work experience with demonstrated troubleshooting and repair experience with air compressors, vacuum systems, boilers, valves, pumps and motors.
- Demonstrated cross functional skills in Electrical and/or HVAC Systems.
- Driver's License: Yes
- To drive an Augusta Health Vehicle, must also be 21 years old and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must be approved by Risk Management.
- Eligibility to work in the United States and meet Virginia state employment requirements
Requirements
~1 min read- Education:
- Completion of apprenticeship training courses or vocational training such as the Valley Career & Technical Center consisting of at least twelve (12) technical training courses.
- Completion of other formal technical trade training from a Vocational School or Military Technical School.
- Licensure/Certification: Possession of one or more certifications in a relevant building maintenance trade (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, electrical, facilities maintenance, or related field).
- Experience: None
- Prior experience in a hospital, healthcare system, or related service-oriented environment
- Familiarity with Augusta Health’s systems, workflows, or organizational culture is a plus
- Must be able to read blueprints and other technical documentation.
- Ability to perform troubleshooting & repairs on a wide variety of facility utility and building infrastructure systems including air compressors, boilers and door hardware.
- Basic computer keyboard skills necessary for sending and receiving e-mails and entering work status updates for assigned work orders.
- Must be able to climb ladders.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills with operation and maintenance of building utility systems including heating and cooling systems, air compressors, water distribution systems, hot water heaters, natural gas piping systems and medical gas systems.
- Functions effectively as a contributing member of the Plant Operations Department work team.
- Maintains responsibility for individual tasks and assignments but is not accountable for overseeing or directing the work of the team.
- Must demonstrate good troubleshooting skills.
