What You'll Do
The Tax Analyst is a key member of the MyLodgeTax Compliance team, Expert lodging and short-term rental customers with high-volume, multi-jurisdiction lodging tax compliance across U.S. states, counties, and cities. As MyLodgeTax scales across thousands of taxpayer jurisdictions, this role helps ensure accurate filings, reduces compliance risk, and supports customer confidence in Avalara’s lodging solutions.
This position helps protect customer revenue, mitigates tax exposure associated with lodging taxes, and contributes to Avalara’s AI-first operational strategy.
This role builds strong compliance expertise through accurate execution, learning, and collaboration. The Analyst supports team-level outcomes (quality, SLA adherence, and customer experience) and contributes to scalable improvements across workflows. By effectively using AI in core processes and following best practices adopted across the team, this role helps increase throughput, reduce manual effort, and support customer trust at scale.
Supports protection of MyLodgeTax customer revenue through accurate, on-time, multi-jurisdiction lodging tax filings.
Helps reduce compliance risk exposure across high-volume lodging and short-term rental portfolios.
Contributes to operational scale and efficiency by using AI-enabled workflows and suggesting filing process improvements.
Supports team capability through thorough documentation, participation in continuous process improvement, and sharing learnings in both tax and AI usage.
What Your Responsibilities Will Be
Responsibilities:
Own end-to-end preparation and filing of multi-jurisdiction lodging tax returns for customers, ensuring 100% on-time submission aligned to SLAs and internal KPIs.
Analyze taxpayer reporting and registration data to identify discrepancies, exposure, or filing risks prior to submission and drive resolution before returns are filed.
Assists ancillary teams to resolve advanced customer inquiries and lodging tax notices with minimal supervision, coordinating with customers and jurisdictions as needed.
Improve filing cycle time, accuracy, and scalability through documented process and technology enhancements, including better use of MyLodgeTax and Avalara's Returns Console applications.
Collaborate cross-functionally (e.g., product, onboarding, support, other compliance teams) to strengthen lodging compliance execution and customer experience.
Participate actively in team and functional meetings, sharing insights, presenting on lodging tax topics, and contributing to committee or project work that improves the compliance product.
Support achievement of monthly KPI and billing targets while maintaining Avalara standards for efficiency, profitability, and customer satisfaction.

Leverage AI tools to accelerate data validation, month-end reconciliations, and filing cycles for lodging tax returns.
Draft clear, professional customer and jurisdictional communications using AI, while applying strong judgment and tax expertise before sending.
Use AI to summarize complex customer issues, notices, and filing histories into concise, action-oriented narratives for internal and external stakeholders.
Quantify measurable AI impact such as reduced review hours per filing cycle, improved on-time filing rates, or lower notice volume for assigned customers.
Implement at least one AI-enabled workflow enhancement within the first 12 months that materially improves speed, quality, or scale of MyLodgeTax filings.
Apply AI responsibly in alignment with Avalara’s security and compliance standards and share AI best practices to elevate team productivity.

Maintain high accuracy rates with reduced rework or lodging tax notice volume attributable to filing errors or missed deadlines.
Implement at least one documented AI-driven workflow improvement that shortens cycle time or improves quality for MyLodgeTax filings.
Demonstrate strong working knowledge of MyLodgeTax and Returns Console, becoming a go-to resource for peers on lodging tax compliance questions and tooling.

Qualifications (Required)
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field.
3–5 years of experience in indirect tax compliance, with meaningful exposure to lodging, short-term rental, or similar multi-jurisdiction tax regimes (e.g., Sales & Use, Communications).
Demonstrated experience preparing and filing multi-jurisdiction tax returns and working with high-volume, deadline-driven filing cycles.
Strong analytical skills and at least intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel; working knowledge of other MS Office applications (Word, PowerPoint) and standard productivity tools.
Proven ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high attention to detail and organizational discipline.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a customer-focused mindset and the ability to explain complex lodging tax concepts clearly.
Demonstrated application of AI tools to improve efficiency, accuracy, or customer experience in prior roles (e.g., data analysis, document drafting, summarization, workflow automation).
Experience collaborating effectively with onsite and distributed teams and stakeholders, including participation in team or committee initiatives.
