Mold Technician

The Mold Technician is responsible for supporting the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and continuous improvement of injection molds used in manufacturing. This position serves as the technical expert for mold performance, ensuring molds produce high-quality parts while minimizing downtime, scrap, and maintenance costs. The Mold Technician works closely with production, maintenance, engineering, tooling suppliers, and quality teams to optimize molding processes and tooling reliability.

This position reports to Sr. Director of Manufacturing – Connectivity.

According to the FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act), this position is classified as:      

• Non-Exempt

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

• Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on injection molds.

• Disassemble, clean, inspect, and reassemble molds according to maintenance schedules.
• Troubleshoot mold-related issues including flashing, short shots, part sticking, cosmetic defects, dimensional variation, and premature tool wear.
• Repair or coordinate repair of damaged mold components such as cavities, cores, slides, ejector systems, cooling circuits, and hot runner systems.
• Maintain mold service records and maintenance history.

• Support mold setup, startup, and qualification activities.

• Work with molding technicians and operators to identify root causes of molding defects.
• Recommend tooling or process changes to improve quality, cycle time, and productivity.
• Monitor mold performance and identify opportunities for preventative action.

• Evaluate mold condition and recommend rebuilds, upgrades, or replacement components.

• Coordinate with external mold shops and tooling suppliers as needed.
• Review mold drawings, tooling documentation, and maintenance procedures.
• Assist in mold acceptance and validation activities for new or modified tools.

• Lead efforts to improve mold reliability and reduce downtime.

• Identify recurring mold issues and implement corrective actions.
• Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Contribute to design-for-manufacturability feedback based on tooling experience.

• Associate degree in Tool & Die, Manufacturing Technology, Plastics Technology, or equivalent experience preferred.

• 5+ years of experience working with injection molds in a manufacturing environment.
• Hands-on experience with mold maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.
• Understanding of injection molding fundamentals and plastics processing.
• Ability to read engineering drawings, mold assembly drawings, and technical specifications.
• Experience with measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, and gauges.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.

• Experience with multi-cavity, family, insert, or hot-runner molds.

• Tool room, machining, EDM, surface grinding, or polishing experience.
• Experience coordinating mold builds and repairs with external suppliers.
• Knowledge of mold cooling systems, venting, gating, ejector systems, and mold steel selection.
• Experience with mold validation, PPAP, or process qualification activities.
