The HSE has created six new health regions. Each region is responsible for providing both hospital and community care for the people in that area. Bringing community health services and hospitals together means we can take a more patient-centred approach to healthcare.

HSE Dublin North East provides health and social care to North Dublin, Louth, Meath, Monaghan and most areas of Cavan. HSE Dublin North East Region includes the following hospitals;

• Beaumont Hospital • Cavan General Hospital • Connolly Hospital • Louth County Hospital • National Orthopaedic Hospital Cappagh • Monaghan General Hospital • Mater Misericordiae University Hospital • Our Ladys Hospital Navan • Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital • Rotunda Hospital

The DNE RHA is largely made up from a merging of former Community Healthcare Organisations, the RCSI Hospital Group and some areas of Ireland East Hospital Group. The new RHA serves populations in five counties – North Dublin, Meath, Louth, Cavan and Monaghan. The area stretches from the north banks of the River Liffey in Dublin City Centre, north to the border with Northern Ireland, and west to the border with County Donegal. It comprises urban, rural and commuter belt areas, and covers approximately 6,817 square kilometres in total. There is considerable variation in population density from a low of 39 persons per square kilometre in Cavan to a high of 4,139 persons per square kilometre in north Dublin city. Residents of neighbouring areas such as South Dublin and Kildare also access hospitals for secondary care and maternity services. Beaumont Hospital provides emergency and acute Secondary Care services to the local community is also a designated Cancer Centre, the Regional Treatment Centre for Ear, Nose and Throat and Gastroenterology and also the National Referral Centre for Neurosurgery and Neurology, Renal Transplantation, and Cochlear Implantation - as such treating patients from all parts of the country.

ENDOCRINOLOGY SERVICES IN CONNOLLY HOSPITALThe Connolly Hospital Academic Department of Endocrinology provides a wide range of endocrine and diabetes care to people living within the catchment area of the hospital. Amongst the activities of the department are a busy diabetes day centre, an active technology-based type 1 diabetes service (including the delivery of DAFNE and transition clinics), the provision of outpatient clinics (for all sub-types of endocrine and diabetes conditions), the provision of specialist inpatient consultations, and the provision of general internal medicine care. The department also provides community-based type 2 diabetes care via its integration with the Dublin North West community hub, currently located in St Mary’s Hospital in the Phoenix Park. At present, the department is in the process of launching a regional-level service for specialist obesity care under the auspices of the National Clinical Programme for Obesity.
