Blend Labs, Inc. (NYSE: BLND) is seeking a strategic, hands-on Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting Lead to own the Company's external reporting function and serve as its primary technical accounting resource. The Lead owns the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of all external financial reporting, serves as Blend's subject matter expert on U.S. GAAP and SEC reporting requirements, and owns equity and lease accounting end to end.
This is a highly visible role that partners closely with executive leadership, corporate accounting, FP&A, investor relations, legal, tax, human resources, and external auditors. Beyond compliance, Blend views public reporting as a key communication tool. The Lead will help tell the story of the business accurately through MD&A and disclosures, and will prepare the function for increasing complexity as the business and the external reporting landscape continue to evolve.
The Lead will drive improvements to reporting automation, strengthen the control environment, and partner with accounting and IT to implement the tools needed to scale.
Responsibilities
~1 min readReporting to the Head of Accounting and working closely with the Corporate Controller, the Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting Lead owns Blend's SEC reporting, technical accounting, equity and lease accounting, audit management, and the systems and team that support them.
- Own and oversee the preparation and filing of all SEC reports, including Forms 10-K, 10-Q, and 8-K, and the related financial statements, footnotes, and MD&A
- Serve as the Company's subject matter expert on U.S. GAAP and SEC reporting requirements
- Research, draft, and review technical accounting memos supporting complex transactions and significant management judgments, with full citation to authoritative literature
- Monitor, assess, and implement new accounting pronouncements and emerging disclosure requirements, including income statement expense disaggregation
- Ensure consistency, accuracy, and clarity of financial disclosures across all reporting materials, including earnings releases and investor communications
- Own equity accounting under ASC 718, including stock-based compensation (primarily for RSUs, PRSUs
- Own lease accounting under ASC 842, including evaluation of new and modified arrangements, right-of-use asset and lease liability schedules, and the related financial statement disclosures
- Support the Company's equity administration function, partnering on equity plan operations, participant-level transactions, share reserve tracking, and reconciliation of the equity administration platform to the general ledger
- Evaluate and enhance the Company's financial reporting processes, controls, and systems to support scalability and efficiency
- Drive improvements in close timelines, reporting automation, and data integrity
- Lead use of Workiva; partner with finance and IT on related tools and platforms, including the ERP
- Strengthen the reporting function in preparation for future growth and increasing reporting complexity
- Serve as a primary point of contact for the external auditors and support the annual audit and quarterly review processes end-to-end
- Ensure compliance with SOX and internal controls, including design, documentation, testing support, and continuous improvement
- Proactively identify and mitigate financial reporting risks
- Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing financial reporting team, including onshore and offshore resources
- Establish clear expectations, provide coaching, and develop future leaders within the organization
- Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Bring foundational technical expertise, ensuring senior leadership has confidence in the integrity and reliability of the reporting infrastructure
- Collaborate with FP&A, investor relations, legal, tax, human resources, and operations to ensure alignment in financial messaging and disclosures
- Support investor relations with earnings materials and external communications
- Build strong relationships with business leaders and leverage those partnerships to enhance the accuracy and quality of MD&A and disclosures
- Partner with leadership on strategic initiatives, transactions, and business growth opportunities
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA required
- 9+ years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience
- Public accounting foundation, ideally manager-level experience
- Extensive SEC reporting experience, preferably with direct ownership of filings
- Strong technical accounting expertise, including ASC 718 stock-based compensation, ASC 842 leases
- Extensive Workiva experience
- Public-company experience in software, SaaS, FinTech, or other technology industries preferred
- Proven experience leading teams and managing complex reporting environments
- Views SEC reporting as a strategic communication tool—not solely a compliance function—and effectively articulates the Company's business story to investors and stakeholders.
- Highly organized and effective under deadline pressure, with a consistent track record of meeting filing deadlines and audit deliverables without compromise.
- Builds strong relationships with business leaders and leverages those partnerships to enhance the quality, clarity, and effectiveness of MD&A and disclosure reporting.
