Why teach at the British Council – Natalia's Story Role Description & Purpose The British Council in Prague is seeking a passionate Teacher of English to provide learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience while delivering teaching to the highest standards of ELT. Working within a well-established and respected Teaching Centre, you will teach young learners, adults, and corporate clients, creating engaging lessons that promote effective learning and support learners in achieving their goals. You will play an important role in maintaining and enhancing the British Council’s reputation as a global leader in English Language Teaching and contribute to its wider cultural relations mission. Reporting to a member of the academic management team, you will join a collaborative teaching environment that values quality, innovation, and professional growth. You will actively participate in and contribute to an established Continuing Professional Development programme, share best practices with colleagues, and work closely with teaching centre teams across Poland, Greece, Slovakia, and Hungary. Role Accountabilities As a Teacher of English with the British Council in Prague, you will plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality English language lessons that meet the needs of a diverse range of learners, taking into account different learning styles, goals, and modes of learning. You will ensure all teaching aligns with British Council Global Teaching Standards while monitoring learner progress, providing regular feedback, and encouraging learner autonomy to support successful outcomes. Through active participation in professional development and performance management, you will contribute to maintaining excellence in teaching and learning and help uphold the British Council’s reputation as a leader in English Language Teaching. Beyond the classroom, you will play an active role in supporting Teaching Centre activities, contributing to the development and improvement of courses, materials, and services, attending staff meetings, and working collaboratively as part of a dedicated teaching team. You will help deliver an outstanding customer experience by supporting local marketing initiatives, communicating effectively with students, and completing teaching-related administration to a high standard. The role also involves building positive relationships with customers and colleagues, promoting awareness of the British Council’s cultural relations mission, and creating opportunities for learners to engage with UK culture and intercultural understanding. You will be expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and compliance, ensuring policies relating to safeguarding, data protection, equality, diversity and inclusion, special educational needs and disability, and health and safety are consistently applied in all aspects of your work. Qualifications & Experience Essential * Undergraduate degree (any discipline) * Certificate in Cambridge Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA); Trinity Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certification; or equivalent recognised qualification. * Language proficiency: High proficiency in English, demonstrating full mastery across all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), equivalent to CEFR C2 level. * 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA/Trinity Cert TESOL experience. Desirable: * Recognised diploma in EFL e.g. DELTA; Relevant Young Learner qualification * Experience in teaching relevant age groups: * * Primary aged 6 to 10 (200+ hours) * Lower Secondary aged 11 to 14 (200+ hours) * Upper Secondary aged 15 to 17 (200+ hours) * Adults General English 18+ (800+ hours) Desirable: * * Early Years aged 4 to 5 (50+hours) * Corporate teaching – closed groups and one to one Important Information * Location: Prague, Czech Republic * Contract Hours: 35 contracted hours per week, including 21 teaching hours. Monday to Friday, 2:00 PM–7:45 PM (specific teaching hours will depend on the assigned classes). * Contract Type: Fixed term contract (2 years) * Salary: CZK 43,000–46,500 (pro-rated), depending on qualifications and experience. * Benefits: * Annual Leave 35 days * Public holidays up to 14 days (Czech Republic and UK) * Medical insurance: local state health insurance * Others: meal vouchers worth CZK 2,323 per month; vouchers for leisure activities worth CZK 3,520 per year; sick days; and professional development opportunities. * Right to Work: Candidates must have the pre-existing right to live and work in the Czech Republic. The British Council is unable to provide visa sponsorship or relocation support. * Background Screening: Initial and continued employment with the British Council is subject to annual background checks.
