Overview

Our client is seeking a Director of Mechanical Engineering to lead and grow their mechanical engineering practice. This leadership role will oversee project delivery, mentor engineering staff, drive technical excellence, and support business development initiatives across a diverse portfolio of commercial, institutional, healthcare, and mission-critical projects.

This individual will work closely with executive leadership and other discipline directors to guide strategic growth while ensuring high-quality engineering design and client satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the mechanical engineering department, including hiring, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Oversee HVAC and mechanical system design for commercial, healthcare, institutional, industrial, and mission-critical facilities.
  • Provide technical oversight and quality control on project deliverables including plans, specifications, and calculations.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record on major projects where applicable.
  • Collaborate with architecture and other engineering disciplines to deliver integrated building system designs.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships and support business development efforts.
  • Assist with proposal development, project budgeting, and scheduling.
  • Ensure projects meet budget, schedule, and regulatory requirements.
  • Establish department standards, workflows, and best practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • 12–15+ years of experience in mechanical/HVAC engineering within an AEC consulting environment.
  • 5+ years of leadership or management experience overseeing engineering teams.
  • Strong experience with HVAC system design, load calculations, and energy-efficient building systems.
  • Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and industry-standard mechanical design software.
  • Experience with codes, standards, and energy compliance requirements.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience leading projects in healthcare, life sciences, data centers, or higher education.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE standards and sustainable design practices.
  • Proven ability to grow teams and develop client relationships.
