Community Health Worker Apprentice

The Central Health CHW Apprenticeship Program is a unique "earn and learn" opportunity for individuals seeking to become Certified Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Travis County.  

As a full-time Central Health employee, apprentices (or trainees) will receive hourly pay, benefits, and hands-on training while completing the coursework required for CHW certification as required by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. 

CHWs play a critical role in bridging healthcare access gaps, supporting patients, and advocating for underserved communities. In this position, apprentices (or trainees) will learn to provide non-medical support services, working under the guidance of experienced CHWs and healthcare professionals. 

This paid CHW apprenticeship includes approximately 520 hours of in-person instruction and externship experience, ensuring apprentices (or trainees) gain the knowledge and skills needed to excel as CHWs. Specifically, this is a 13-week program and on-site attendance is mandatory between the hours of 8am-5pm.   The  apprentice will provide direct and indirect patient care under the direction of a Central Health CHW senior staff member during the externship experience. Applicants are expected to travel between different sites during the training period. 

Essential Functions: 

• →Complete the state sponsored Community Health Worker apprenticeship program following the assigned training schedule. 
• →Successfully complete course learning modules. 
• →Successfully complete required externship hours. 
• →Observe and follow Central Health’s health and safety procedures. 
• →Adheres to patient confidentiality at all times and treats patients with courtesy and respect. 
• →Collaborates, communicates respectfully and professionally with all members of the care team in providing patient-centered care and regarding processes and clinical issues. 

Minimum Education: 

• High School Diploma or equivalent (higher degree accepted)

Preferred Experience: 

• One year of preferred experience or volunteer in customer service, non-profit work, community organization, or the health field
