Medical Assistant

This is a full-time position for a Medical Assistant within the Department of Family & Community Medicine providing outpatient care to patients and supporting physicians across all clinical areas of the practice. The role is responsible for assisting providers and nurses with patient examinations, ensuring efficient operations and high-quality, patient-centered care.

This position is primarily based out of the Norfolk office location; however, travel may be required to our Portsmouth location to meet the department’s demands.

• →Triage incoming patients by obtaining vital signs, following standing triage orders, reconcile medication list, reconcile allergies, make sure immunizations are up to date and prepare patient for the visit.
• →Completes delegated tasks from the current and prior day i.e.: patient messages, prescription refills, lab results, referrals, home health agency requests, medication prior authorizations, patient forms, and physician follow-up. All tasks must be reviewed, addressed, and marked appropriately before the close of each business day.
• →Assist physicians with examinations, minor surgeries, diagnostic procedures and treatments. Provide basic patient care and education as directed by provider and standing orders.
• →Coordinates services with specialists i.e.: radiation oncology, pulmonology, endocrinology, nutritional counseling, or social services consultation. Documents all correspondence and interventions in the electronic health record.
• →Assist supervisors in the training of new staff members.
• →Maintains current inventory of medical and office supplies Cleans, sterilizes, and maintains used instrumentation per department protocol.
• →Medical Assistants are required to fill in for other clinical staff during vacations and illness and perform other duties as assigned by providers, or supervisors at both sites.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

• Completion of a Medical Assistant program and certification; RMA or CMA required.

• Completion of BLS or other approved CPR courses required with recertification every 2 years.

• Ability to balance multiple priorities and tasks required.

• Ability to make professional decisions under the supervision of the physicians and licensed nurses required.

• Professional interaction skills with physicians, outside offices, pharmacies, referring agencies, hospital personnel and support staff required.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

• Ability to read and comprehend all information required for this position required.

• Ability to calculate figures and amounts required for medication administration required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous medical office experience with relevant skills preferred. Customer service-oriented individual is required. Experience in a “fast paced” ambulatory setting is desirable but not required.
