Principal Engineer

We are currently looking for 2 Principal Engineers (Payments and Accounts) to play pivotal leadership roles across our payments and core banking technology landscape. These roles combine deep technical expertise with strong people and delivery leadership, shaping how we design, build and run payment solutions and drive the development and delivery of the Accounts domain technology platform across the Group.

Working closely with senior technology and value stream leaders, and reporting to the Group Head of Engineering, you’ll help define strategy while actively driving end-to-end delivery to ensure our core banking and payment platforms are secure, scalable and future-ready.

These roles can be based from our Wolverhampton, Chatham or London office and will require occasional travel between all OSB Group locations.

We are seeking 2 Principal Engineers to provide technical leadership across two critical domains. These roles are central to delivering and operating modern, cloud-first banking platforms that support end-to-end customer journeys—from account origination and servicing through to payments processing.

You will drive engineering strategy, lead high-performing teams, and ensure the delivery of resilient, scalable, and compliant platforms aligned with OSB Group’s technology and business objectives.

As Principal Engineer for Payments, you will lead the design, delivery, and operation of our payments ecosystem, covering Faster Payments, BACS, CHAPS, cards, Open Banking, and mobile wallets.

Your responsibilities will include:

• →Setting and executing the engineering strategy for the payments domain
• →Leading the design, build, and operation of resilient, high-performing payments platforms
• →Owning end-to-end technical delivery, including architecture, development, testing, deployment, and live operations
• →Providing hands-on leadership across full-stack engineering teams, driving best practices in quality, automation, and cloud-first engineering
• →Overseeing integration with UK payment schemes and core banking platforms (including Mambu)
• →Ensuring regulatory compliance and operational resilience across all payments services
• →Partnering with product, architecture, and business teams to translate customer and regulatory requirements into scalable solutions
• →Managing supplier and partner relationships to ensure delivery meets organisational standards

As Principal Engineer for Accounts, you will lead the development and operation of core banking capabilities across the account lifecycle.

Your responsibilities will include:

• →Defining and executing the engineering strategy for the Accounts domain
• →Leading the design and delivery of core capabilities, including account onboarding, deposits, savings, interest, and lifecycle management
• →Driving integration with core banking platforms (including Mambu) and surrounding systems
• →Owning end-to-end delivery, including development, testing, deployment, and change governance
• →Establishing cloud architecture, security, and cost optimisation practices
• →Overseeing integrations with CRM/CIAM, payments services, and data platforms
• →Ensuring reliability, scalability, and regulatory compliance across account services
• →Leading engineering teams across APIs, orchestration, and backend services

• Base salary between £90,000 - £110,000 dependant upon experience

We are looking for talented individuals who have the experience and knowledge set out below:

• Significant experience in a senior technical leadership role within banking or financial services
• Deep expertise in the payments domain, including real-time payments, cards, BACS, CHAPS, Open Banking and APIs or Core Banking/Accounts domain
• Proven experience designing, scaling and operating secure, high-performance payments and/or savings platforms
• Strong background in core banking systems/platforms (Mambu), cloud-native architectures, microservices and DevOps practices
• Solid understanding of regulatory, risk and compliance requirements (e.g. PSD2, PCI DSS, GDPR)
• Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP) and modern data platforms
