Safety Internship

This internship is located at the Steel Dynamics MetalTech Division located in Pittsburgh, PA. This internship will take place during Summer 2026.

• →Support the facility’s safety team by assisting with continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen safety culture and reduce risk.
• →Participate in employee training and safety events, including new hire orientation, monthly safety sessions, and safety communications.
• →Assist with the development, implementation, and documentation of safety programs in alignment with OSHA and other regulatory standards.
• →Conduct and track safety audits, facility walkthroughs, and Job Safety Analyses, identifying hazards and supporting corrective actions.
• →Contribute to incident investigations and reporting by gathering information, organizing data, and assisting with follow-up actions.
• →Help maintain compliance records, prepare safety documentation, and support internal and external audit processes.
• →Collaborate with cross-functional teams on safety-related projects, standard operating procedures, and risk assessments.

• Candidate should be enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in a safety related major.
• Preferred GPA of at least 2.7.

• Willingness to conduct safety audits and inspections in an industrial environment.

• Foundational knowledge of OSHA standards and general industry safety regulations.

• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify issues, prioritize tasks, and recommend solutions.

• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, objectivity, and confidentiality.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

• Integrate into the facility’s safety operations team and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by supporting cross-departmental efforts that enhance safety culture and reduce risk.
• Champion improved safety practices among employees by participating in new hire orientation and training, assisting with monthly safety events, and distributing safety alerts and communications.
• Assist in the development, implementation, and documentation of safety controls in alignment with OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations, including maintaining compliance records and supporting internal audits.
• Conduct and track monthly safety training sessions, including specialized content on confined space entry, high-voltage operations, hazardous materials handling, and PPE use.
• Participate in and support Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Lockout/Tagout/Try Out (LOTOTO) reviews, and development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and risk assessments across key production areas.
• Support the completion of active PSIFs (Potential Serious Injury or Fatality reports) by gathering facts, organizing data, and following up on implemented corrective actions.
• Perform safety audits and facility walkthroughs to identify hazards, assist with root cause analysis, and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders for corrective action planning.
• Contribute to corporate reporting duties by preparing documentation on incidents, safety improvements, and compliance metrics to support internal reviews and external audits.
• Support the management and revision of safety policies and procedures, aligning them with evolving best practices and regulatory standards.
• Assist with incident investigations, compiling reports, and tracking follow-up actions to ensure lessons learned are communicated and integrated into preventive systems.
