The I&E Superintendent is responsible for direct field leadership and execution of instrumentation and electrical projects within oil & gas, petrochemical, and industrial environments. This role oversees all field activities, ensuring safe, high-quality, and productive installation, testing, and commissioning of I&E systems.

The Superintendent is accountable for crew performance, daily productivity, and execution in live and turnaround environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all on-site I&E construction activities across multiple crews and foremen
  • Plan and execute daily work activities to meet project schedule and productivity targets
  • Directly manage manpower, equipment, and materials to optimize field efficiency
  • Coordinate work in live facilities, including tie-ins and shutdown/turnaround work
  • Oversee installation and commissioning of:
    • Instrumentation (pressure, temperature, level, flow devices)
    • Electrical systems (cable tray, conduit, terminations, MCCs, VFDs, panels)
  • Ensure proper execution of:
    • Cable pulling, terminations, and grounding
    • Instrument installation, tubing, and calibration
    • Loop checks, point-to-point verification, and system testing
  • Support startup and commissioning activities
  • Ensure compliance with Class I Div 1 & Div 2 hazardous area requirements
  • Drive daily and weekly labor productivity; adjust crews based on production needs
  • Track field progress against schedule and labor budgets
  • Identify and communicate scope changes, delays, and inefficiencies
  • Support Project Manager in managing costs and maintaining project profitability
  • Enforce a strong safety culture aligned with OSHA, NFPA 70/70E, and client standards
  • Ensure compliance with LOTO, energized work, and arc flash safety procedures
  • Lead daily tailgate safety meetings and enforce safe work practices
  • Serve as a leader in emergency response and site safety initiatives
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, client representatives, and other trades
  • Communicate daily progress, constraints, and needs to Project Management
  • Review drawings, specifications, and work packages to ensure accurate execution
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to field personnel

This job operates in a petrochechemical / refinery environment. Exposure to cold working conditions during winter months and hot working conditions during the summer months; exposure to noise, workers must wear protecting hearing equipment or frequently shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level. In an emergency situation, exposure to hazardous chemicals may occur and the use of a respirator is required. All employees are required to be fit tested for the various respirators used as well as the ability to successfully pass a pulmonary function test (PFT).

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of the job, the position of an Analyzer Technician III may be extremely physical at times. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required, and for long periods of time to bend, stoop, walk, climb, squat, reach, kneel, push/pull, stand, sit, hand strength and dexterity. An Analyzer Technician III will frequently lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift more than 50 pounds. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Must be able to work at heights and be able to climb ladders and stairways and work off platforms.

 

This is a full-time position. Typical days and hours of work are variable/ project dependent. Over-time work is common and may be required as job duties demand.

 

Travel is expected. Extensive travel throughout U.S. and overnight stay for extended periods of time.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in industrial construction with strong I&E focus
  • 3+ years in a Superintendent or Foreman leadership role
  • Proven experience in:
    • Oil & gas, petrochemical, or heavy industrial environments
    • Working in live plants, turnarounds, or shutdowns
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Industrial electrical systems and instrumentation
    • Installation, testing, and commissioning practices
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical/instrumentation drawings and P&IDs
  • Valid driver’s license with clean MVR
  • Knowledge and understanding of NEC

 

Nice to Have

  • State license, NCCER, or equivalent
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Experience leading large multi-crew projects
