Site & Safety Training Trainer (On Call, Temporary)
Quick Summary
SST307, SST308, SST305, SCA212) Deliver all trainings under WJP's DOB Course Provider status (CP077), ensuring every class, sign-in/sign-out log,
Worker’s Justice Project (WJP) www.workersjustice.org was founded in 2010 to address the racial and economic injustices that low-wage immigrant workers face in New York City by building collective power to win institutional change. WJP runs two long-standing worker’s centers in Brooklyn. We promote justice and opportunity for low-wage immigrant workers in New York City by pushing for systematic enforcement and expansion of workplace protections, which include labor and occupational health and safety standards while advocating for industry-specific efforts to improve working conditions. WJP also offers skills-building training to workers in health & safety and industry-specific areas, and we educate immigrant communities about their rights in the workplace and how to exercise those rights.
WJP is a fiscally sponsored project of TSNE (www.tsne.org).
Responsibilities
~1 min readThe Site & Safety Training (SST) Trainer will develop and conduct 10 hours SST and 8 hours Refresher Health and Safety Trainings in English and Spanish in New York City for construction workers and other low-wage workers. These trainings are part of the Worker’s Justice Project’s programs and services for immigrant workers and day laborers.
The On-Call SST Trainer will work alongside WJP’s Construction Workers United (CWU) team, which works to strengthen and expand WJP’s membership, to win concrete, transformative workplace campaign victories, build a culture of safety in the workplace and contribute to long-term movement building in New York City and beyond.
This is an on-call position that reports to the CWU Director.
- Conduct DOB-approved 10-Hour Site Safety Training (SST) and 8-Hour SST Refresher courses in both Spanish and English, tailored to the needs of immigrant construction workers, in full compliance with NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) requirements. (DOB Course Codes: SST307, SST308, SST305, SCA212)
- Deliver all trainings under WJP's DOB Course Provider status (CP077), ensuring every class, sign-in/sign-out log, and completion record is conducted and documented in accordance with WJP and DOB protocols — not independently or under any other provider affiliation.
- Educate SST training participants about WJP's broader programs and services for its members, and the importance of workers organizing together to assert their workplace rights.
- Identify potential worker leaders emerging from trainings for the CWU team to follow up with, supporting their leadership development and continued engagement with the organization.
- Work closely with the Program and Training Coordinator to ensure all training documentation — attendance logs, sign-in/sign-out sheets, and completion records — is accurately collected, submitted in a timely manner, and available for funder and DOB reporting requirements.
- Develop training materials, including curricula, fact sheets, and supplementary resources, in accordance with DOB and WJP standards. All materials developed for SST or Refresher courses are considered part of WJP's official training documentation and course record, and must be submitted to and retained by WJP — they may not be used, distributed, or claimed under any other organization or training provider.
- Strictly follow all terms, requirements, and standards set by the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) and WJP for SST training delivery, documentation, and compliance, understanding that non-compliance may jeopardize WJP's DOB Course Provider status.
- Understand and comply with the fact that all trainings are subject to audit and observation, including but not limited to audits from SBS, DOB, and other funding or regulatory agencies WJP works with, as well as in-class observations conducted by CWU staff, and must be prepared to support such audits or observations at any time.
- Stay current on all DOB requirements, policy changes, and curriculum updates by participating in DOB-required seminars and webinars, and promptly communicate any relevant changes to WJP's Program and Training Coordinator.
- Implement classes using a popular education framework, with an emphasis on developing worker leaders capable of forming health and safety committees within their own workplaces.
- Foster a training environment that encourages worker participation, critical thinking, and collective action around workplace health and safety.
Perform other duties as assigned related to the provision and administration of SST and Refresher classes under WJP's DOB-approved course offerings.
