The Associate Vice Provost & Director of the Center for Civic Excellence provides institutional leadership of the Center for Civic Excellence at Utah State University (USU) which is the administrative unit responsible for overseeing and assessing general education. This role will report to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and serves as the operational lead for the Center for Civic Excellence, chairing the Center for Civic Excellence Curriculum Committee and overseeing the Associate Directors in carrying out the mission of the center and all of its teaching and professional development responsibilities. The Director will lead through shared governance, engaging departments, faculty and Faculty Senate in shaping priorities, assessing program effectiveness, and planning sustainable implementation with colleges and departments.

Responsibilities

  • →Chair the Center for Civic Excellence Curriculum Committee.
  • →Ensure all operations of the Center for Civic Excellence are successfully executed in accordance with the mission, values, and strategic priorities of the Civic Center, including curricular development and governance, assessment, scheduling, concurrent enrollment, professional development, student success initiatives, and website and communications.
  • →Work with the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and the Division of Student Success to oversee USU’s first-year experience course, USU 1010 – Connections.
  • →Hire and supervise Associate Directors to execute the various domains of operational work.
  • →Establish a culture of excellence and impact across the Center for Civic Excellence, with students as primary stakeholders.
  • →Work with the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Office of Data & Analytics to ensure a data informed approach to instruction and curriculum assessment and review.
  • →In support of student and faculty success, interface with the Center for Civic Excellence stakeholders and partners such as, but not limited to, the Office of the Registrar, the Division of Student Success (particularly the
  • →Academic Support units), USU Online, Center for Instructional Design and Innovation, etc.
  • →Implement the Civic Center’s budget according to set spending priorities.
  • →Work with the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education to ensure coordination with colleges, departments, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • →Contribute to the production of necessary internal and external reporting on the work of the Center for Civic Excellence.
  • →Assist the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education in strategic responsibilities related to the Center for Civic Excellence.
  • →Fulfill faculty responsibilities (25% time) consistent with the rank of Associate Professor or full Professor.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree in a field within the university’s academic mission.
  • 5+ years of experience with teaching and curricular development in general education.
  • Demonstrated impactful leadership in general education, student success, teaching and learning, and academic affairs.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with a broad range of university stakeholders, including academic leadership, faculty, and student support units.
  • Significant experience with general education curriculum, policy, administration, student success, and concurrent enrollment, including demonstrated ability to navigate complex institutional and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong project management, team building, and communications skills.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement in teaching and student outcomes.
  • Experience with student first year experiences.
