This is an exempt position in the Aviation Technology Maintenance Management program supporting the Aviation Technology programs.

We are seeking a Lab Manager in the Aviation Technology Maintenance Management program, with a professional aviation maintenance background. The successful candidate will oversee the daily operations and management of the Aviation Maintenance laboratory spaces on the USU Logan Campus and at the Logan Airport. Incumbents ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of the laboratory and the safe use and maintenance of equipment and facilities. This person must also be able to maintain, and sometimes build, lab training devices and equipment. Good communication skills both verbal and written are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and manages the day-to-day technical, educational, and research support activities conducted in the laboratory; resolves problems and issues as they arise.
  • Researches and recommends purchases; locates parts, supplies, and research materials for the maintenance of the facility and for students and faculty using the facility.
  • Develops and conducts orientations for students and faculty on the proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Responsible for the training and enforcement of safety and security standards.
  • May conduct training workshops on new technology specific to the lab.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance and repair on laboratory equipment and facilities; ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment, materials, and supplies; performs periodic safety checks.
  • Investigates emerging technologies and makes recommendations in support of teaching and learning initiatives; keeps abreast of technical developments in the field as they relate to the curriculum, technical processes, and materials and equipment including computer hardware and software.
  • Establishes and maintains policies regarding safe use of the facilities and equipment.
  • Assist with outreach and aviation recruitment activities.
  • Maintains accurate records and databases.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Six years of related experience or a bachelor’s degree plus two years of experience is required.
  • Current FAA Airframe and Powerplant licenses
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to teach any of the required FAA Part 147-subjects
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with faculty and students with diverse backgrounds.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Previous teaching experience.
  • Three to five years aviation industry maintenance experience.
  • FAA Inspection Authorization.

    Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Requires walking/standing approximately 65% of time; sitting approximately 20% of time; lifting up to 50 lbs. approximately 5% of time; stooping, forward bending and crouching approximately 10% of time.
  • Requires extensive use of maintenance manuals, both paper and digital format.
  • Requires the ability to verbally communicate with students, staff and faculty.
