Junior WMD Instructor

Junior WMD Instructors shall support and assist WMD Instructors, WMD Analysts, and Regional Coordinators in delivering training to personnel located at overseas and domestic locations as specified in DOS operational plans. Junior WMD Instructors will perform instructional, demonstration, and exercise support under the guidance of a WMD Instructor, WMD Analyst, or Regional Coordinator and will possess the following background, knowledge, and experience:

1. Minimum of two years of general experience in the CBRN field as a certified State, Federal or Military first responder.

2. Specialized experience may be considered instead of, or in addition to, State, Federal, or Military CBRN first responder experience, provided the candidate can demonstrate at least two years of responsible work involving hazardous materials, CBRN-related risks, emergency planning and operations, radiation or radiological materials, or other work in an operational environment requiring the use of personal protective equipment. Qualifying experience may include, but is not limited to, maritime or shipboard hazardous materials and damage control roles; work with nuclear power or other radiological sources; commercial hazardous materials remediation and containment operations; laboratory positions with biosafety or chemical safety responsibilities; and industrial, environmental, or other technical risk management positions in the public or private sector.

3. Candidates possessing a degree from an accredited institution in emergency management, homeland security, public safety, criminal justice, international relations, public health, physical or life sciences, engineering, or a closely related field may be considered with less than two (2) year of specialized experience, provided their academic training and any internships, practicums, or assistantships demonstrate applied exposure to emergency management, hazardous materials, public safety, or security operations.

4. Interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate orally, as well as in writing, and be physically fit to perform prescribed instructor duties are required.   

5. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the DOS and with other federal agencies is required.

6. Have an understanding of instructional concepts and the ability to simplify material into presentations that can be understood by host-country personnel with limited English language capability.

7. Experience or ability to work effectively with foreign language translators/interpreters in the presentation of training materials.

8. Familiarity with standard training evaluation methods and mechanisms, or the ability to learn and apply these methods.

9. General understanding of computer-use skills is required (i.e., Microsoft Office suite of products).

10. The candidate must possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license.

This is a non-supervisory position.

Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
