The City of Alabaster is seeking a skilled and dependable Maintenance Mechanic to join our Public Works team. This position is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and corrective repairs on a wide variety of City-owned vehicles, equipment, and machinery. The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to keeping essential public service equipment operating safely and efficiently.


  • Diagnose, maintain, and repair mechanical and electrical systems on City equipment and vehicles
  • Perform preventative maintenance and corrective repairs on engines, motors, generators, and related equipment
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems efficiently and accurately
  • Dismantle, repair, and reassemble electric motors and components
  • Re-wire electrical panels and replace defective parts as needed
  • Perform welding and fabrication tasks associated with equipment repairs
  • Diagnose and repair gas and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, including:
    • Cars and trucks
    • Tractors and mowers
    • Heavy construction equipment
    • Other City-owned vehicles and machinery
  • Order and maintain inventory of necessary parts, materials, and tools
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records
  • Ensure equipment is operating safely and in compliance with applicable standards

  • Stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

  • Distance vision
  • Color vision
  • Peripheral vision
  • Depth perception
  • Ability to adjust focus

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Experience in automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, or industrial equipment repair preferred
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and welding systems preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • CDL preferred or ability to obtain within designated timeframe
