General Summary: Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, performs maintenance and repair of electrical, mechanical and water supply systems at the Water Treatment Plant and Pumping Station. Serves as a qualified relief operator, as assigned.
Typical Duties:
1. Installs or removes from service and overhauls major components of the water treatment system, such as chemical feeders, clarifying tanks, filtration systems, pumps, wells, and storage tanks.
2. Locates and repairs leaks and blockages in pipes and conduits.
3. Tears down, cleans, lubricates and reassembles motors, valves, pumps and monitoring devices.
4. Checks equipment malfunctions noted by operators, making adjustments and replacing or repairing parts as necessary.
5. Rebuilds or modifies components of the water treatment system using such skills as welding, machining, tool making, blacksmithing and masonry.
6. Performs electrical, mechanical and carpentry work as instructed. Paints pipes, Buildings and equipment.
7. Hoses down equipment, changes chlorine tanks, and monitors chemical supplies.
8. Responds to emergency breakdowns which require immediate repair to maintain adequate water quality and quantity.
9. As a relief Water Treatment Plant Operator, takes periodic meter readings in control room/laboratory, and performs chemical and bacteriological analysis of water samples. Records meter readings and test results, notes abnormal conditions, and adjusts chemical dosages as necessary, and performs other duties of Water Treatment Plant Operator on an assigned shift as required.
10. Participate in general maintenance of buildings and grounds as necessary.
11. Operates crane and performs other tasks involved in pulling and replacing wells.
12. Collects distribution system bacteriological samples.
13. Drives vehicles in performance of duties.
14. Reports on a timecard the jobs worked on and the equipment and materials used. Prepare regular reports as required.
15. Documents work performed and parts and components repaired and replaced on operating equipment as facilities. Enters data on maintenance logs and records for emergencies and/or planned maintenance schedules.
16. Maintains operating equipment and workspaces in a clean and orderly manner. Examples: sweeping, painting, washing, corrosion control, and storing of material and supplies.
17. Performs all work consistent with safety procedures and MSDS guidelines, such as lock-out/tag-out. Regularly reviews safety procedures.
18. Collects water samples for EGLE, EPA, or in-house sampling.
19. Performs all lab work, which includes but is not limited to, mixing reagents, preparing broths, and preparing standards.
20. All other duties as assigned.

Eligibility Requirements: Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license and good driving record at the time of appointment and must maintain during employment in this classification. High school education and two years’ experience in equipment maintenance and repair are required. A 2-year vocational certificate/degree in a related field is desired but not required. Consideration may be given to additional related education in lieu of a portion of the minimum experience requirement. Must obtain minimum of F-4 water treatment certification within one (1) year of appointment and maintain during employment in this position.
Must possess valid Michigan Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire, and good driving record at time of appointment and must be licensed to operate job required equipment as mandated by State law and must maintain licensure during employment in this classification.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, use arms, hands and fingers, talk, hear and see. The employee will frequently be required to use hand strength to grasp tools and turn large valves. The employee will frequently climb steps and occasionally climb ladders. The employee is frequently required to reach, pull and twist with hands and arms; the employee will operate vibrating machinery, use a shovel and hand tools, move and operate portable pumps, air hammers, power saws, etc. The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 90 pounds of material and assist co-workers to lift and/or move heavier objects and must be able to apply torque strength of up to 75 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to work in a business office setting, during which the employee will use limited mobility and manual dexterity to type and enter data; ability to effectively utilize both oral and written communications. The employee works both indoors and outdoors and occasionally works near moving mechanical equipment. The employee frequently works with hazardous chemicals and irritants, using appropriate personal protective equipment. The noise level is usually moderate.
