FLEET MECHANIC II
Performs responsible skilled mechanical work on a variety of automotive equipment; does related work as required.
Work is performed under regular supervision.
Uses modern diagnostic equipment including computers for diagnoses of mechanical problems on a variety of city vehicles and equipment, determines required repairs or replacement of parts and initiates repair; Performs selected repairs and parts replacements on diesel driven equipment; Assist with preventative maintenance of city vehicles and equipment; Repairs and replaces tires; Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition, and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies; Takes down, repairs, and reassembles air compressors, pumps, and related equipment including small engine repair; Lays out and fabricates parts; Does electrical work on automotive equipment, such as troubleshooting electrical problems and repairing or replacing defective parts, repairing and adjusting lights; Performs welding work; Performs road calls for repair of city vehicles and equipment and repair or replacement of tires; Maintains a clean working area and assists in other shop custodial duties; Performs related tasks as required.
General knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment which includes operation of a computer; General knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery; Ability to diagnose the more common defects in the drive trains, chassis, and other components of automotive equipment; Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems: ability to perform heavy manual work in connection with repair work. Ability to interpret work from sketches, and diagrams and installation and repair charts; Ability to understand and follow instructions in both oral and written form.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in repairing automotive and power-driven equipment.
