DESCRIPTION

The Building Inspector I plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with building codes, zoning regulations, and safety standards for construction and development projects within the city. This position involves conducting inspections, reviewing plans, and enforcing regulations to protect the health, safety, and welfare of residents and the community.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience is required, in building inspection, construction management, or related field, preferably in a municipal government setting.
  • Certification as a Building Inspector or plans examiner by a recognized professional organization, such as the International Code Council (ICC), preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License Class C at time of placement and clean driving record.
  • A current trade license is preferred (e.g., electrical, plumbing, HVAC).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of building codes, zoning regulations, and construction standards applicable to residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
  • Skills in computer applications, including inspection software, database management systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Skills in both verbal and written communication, with the ability to convey technical information effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively as part of a team, to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
  • Ability to maintain strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret and apply complex technical codes and regulations to real-world construction projects.
  • Ability to perform inspections in inclement weather at times.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Conduct inspections of new construction, renovations, alterations, and repairs to residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to ensure compliance with building codes, zoning ordinances, and approved plans.
  • Review building plans, permit applications, and related documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with applicable regulations, and provide guidance and assistance to applicants and stakeholders as needed.
  • Perform on-site inspections at various stages of construction, including foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing, and final inspections, to verify compliance with approved plans and regulatory requirements.
  • Inspect existing buildings, structures, and properties for code violations, unsafe conditions, and unpermitted work, and take appropriate enforcement actions to address non-compliance issues and ensure corrective measures are implemented.
  • Document inspection findings, observations, and violations in written reports, inspection logs, and electronic databases, and maintain accurate records of inspection activities and enforcement actions.
  • Communicate inspection results, findings, and recommendations to property owners, contractors, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders in a clear and professional manner, both orally and in writing.
  • Collaborate with other city departments, external agencies, and stakeholders to address complex or multifaceted issues related to building construction, code enforcement, and permitting processes.
  • Provide technical assistance, guidance, and interpretation of building codes, regulations, and standards to departmental staff, contractors, developers, and the public, and participate in educational outreach and training activities as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
