ABOUT THE MARION CIVILIAN POLICE ACADEMY PROGRAM

Deadline to apply is July 31, 2026 but will close early if all spots are filled.

The Marion Civilian Police Academy is an 9-week interactive program designed to create a better understanding and build relationships between citizens and the Marion Police Department through series of evening classes. Class sessions will meet every Wednesday evening at 6 pm for three hours beginning on September 2nd and running through graduation on October 28th. Instructors include members of the Marion Police Department.

Enrollment is limited to 20 participants. Applications will be processed on a rolling basis, and screening will begin immediately. The program will close once all seats are filled, which may occur before the July 31 deadline. Early application is highly encouraged.

The program is open to individuals 18 years and older.  Preference will be given to those who are residents of the City of Marion. The cost of the 9-week program is $20 and participation is limited. Applications will be kept on file for the next session in the event that the Fall 2026 spots are filled. Once your application has been approved, Marion Police Department will reach out to you to collect the $20 fee for your secured spot.

The classes will provide an in-depth view into various aspects of law enforcement. It is an educational and informative program that allows citizens the opportunity to learn about the issues that affect law enforcement efforts in the City of Marion, and how to develop a partnership with the police department. This program allows the participant a unique "hands-on" opportunity in a variety of law enforcement tasks and responsibilities that include patrol operations, investigations, traffic enforcement, emergency response and community policing.  In addition to the 8-week session, participants will have the opportunity to sign up for an optional shadow with 911 Dispatch as well as participate in a patrol ride-along.

GOALS

  • To create a better understanding and communication between citizens and police through education
  • To develop a partnership between the citizens and police in order to establish a safer community

BENEFITS

When residents take a more personal interest in their city and the protection of their neighborhood, they enjoy a safer and closer relationship with their neighbors.

WHY

Community Oriented Policing plays an important and vital role in reducing crime in any community. It is the Police Department's hope that the participants will become partners in identifying problems and solutions to the crime issues that affect Marion and that participants will take their knowledge back to their neighborhoods where they can use it to enhance the quality of neighborhood life.
