Senior UX Designer
Quick Summary
shape scope, work through trade-offs, and design within technical constraints rather than around them Translate complex spatial and workflow data - maps, layers, permits,
CivilGrid is the trusted civil design platform powering affordable infrastructure renewal and growth. We give utilities, civil engineers, and municipalities a single, collaborative source of truth for what's underground so teams can plan, design, and build faster, smarter, and safer.
Our platform consolidates utility records, geotechnical and environmental data, paving moratoriums, and jurisdictional requirements directly from 3,000+ utilities, agencies, and municipalities with full chain-of-custody documentation. Teams at PG&E, Mark Thomas, and dozens of leading engineering firms use CivilGrid to cut research time by up to 88%, reduce project costs, prevent dig-ins, and accelerate delivery on the projects that keep communities running.
We're a venture-backed Series A startup tackling a $4.7T US infrastructure market that has been underserved by software for decades. Founded by industry insiders, each with 10+ years in utilities and civil engineering, we move fast, ship work that matters, and stay close to the customers and field teams we build for.
As Senior UX Designer at CivilGrid, you'll shape how civil engineers, GIS teams, and field crews interact with dense, high-stakes spatial data - utility lines, project boundaries, permits, and more - every day. Our platform lives at the intersection of maps, data, and workflow, and getting the design right means the difference between a tool people fight with and one that fades into the background of their work. You'll partner closely with PMs, engineers, and our UX researcher to take products from early concept through shipped, polished experiences, and help raise the design bar across the team.
This role reports to the Head of Product. It is a hybrid role with expectations that you are working from our Boston, MA office at least 2 days per week if hired. We're only considering candidates based in the Greater Boston area at this time.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →
Own design end to end for your area, from early concept and flows through high-fidelity design, prototyping, and shipped product
- →
Partner with PMs and engineers as a true thought partner: shape scope, work through trade-offs, and design within technical constraints rather than around them
- →
Translate complex spatial and workflow data - maps, layers, permits, project stages - into interfaces that feel simple even when the underlying data isn't
- →
Work closely with our UX researcher to ground design decisions in real customer workflows, and run your own lightweight testing when speed matters
- →
Contribute to and help evolve our design system, raising the bar on consistency and craft as the product and team grow
- →
Move fast and get designs in front of PMs, engineers, and customers early and often rather than polishing in isolation
- →
Partner with other designers and raise the bar by reviewing their work, honing their craft, and helping them grow
6+ years of product design experience, ideally including complex, data-dense, or technical B2B products
A portfolio that shows strong end-to-end thinking - not just polished screens, but the reasoning behind key decisions
Comfort designing for dense, structured data (maps, tables, layered information) without overwhelming the user
You can work independently from an ambiguous problem to a shippable design, and know when to loop in others versus move forward
Strong collaboration instincts - you can defend a design decision with engineers and executives alike, and know when to hold your ground versus adapt
You default to shipping and you'd rather get a good version in front of users this month than a perfect one next quarter
Nice to Have

Bonus: prior industry experience in Utilities, Construction, or Civil Engineering
Bonus: experience building or maturing a design system at an early-stage company
We're a small, but rapidly growing team that ships. Expect direct feedback, real ownership from day one, and proximity to customers — huge utilities, public agencies, and engineering firms whose work depends on what we build. We default to in-person collaboration where it matters and remote-friendly flexibility otherwise. We hire people who care deeply about their craft and the communities our customers serve.
