Part-Time Refuse Collector – Bulk Trash

Minimum Starting Pay: $13.24/Hr


Nature of Work

Performs manual labor in the collection and disposal of bulk household waste and other oversized refuse throughout the City. Employees in this position work as part of a crew to collect items that cannot be disposed of through regular residential garbage service. Work involves lifting and loading heavy materials, operating hand tools, and assisting with the safe operation of collection vehicles. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Refuse Supervisor or designated Crew Leader.

Essential Job Functions
  • Collect and load bulk household items such as furniture, appliances, mattresses, yard debris, and other oversized waste onto collection vehicles.
  • Safely navigate collection routes and maintain awareness of traffic and pedestrians.
  • Lift, carry, and dispose of heavy and bulky materials using proper lifting techniques.
  • Operate hand tools and equipment necessary for collecting and loading debris.
  • Separate prohibited items when required and notify the supervisor of hazardous materials or unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain cleanliness of streets and collection areas by picking up loose debris left during collection.
  • Follow all City safety policies and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Assist with special cleanup projects, storm debris removal, and other Public Works activities as assigned.
  • Perform basic inspections and cleaning of assigned equipment and report maintenance needs.
  • Maintain courteous and professional interactions with residents and coworkers.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects safely and repeatedly.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and proper use of hand tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and the public.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience in sanitation, construction, landscaping, or general labor is preferred but not required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Special Requirements
  • Must possess a valid CDL or be willing to obtain one.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as needed, including overtime during emergency response or storm cleanup.
Physical Requirements

Work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, pushing, pulling, and repetitive lifting. Employees must be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds frequently, with heavier items lifted as part of a team. Work is performed primarily outdoors and involves exposure to traffic, dust, noise, uneven terrain, insects, and varying weather conditions.
