Are you looking for an exciting career in Law Enforcement? The City of Georgetown is hiring for a Police Sergeant!!

 

Position Overview:
Under general supervision, enforces all federal and state laws and the City ordinances relating to public safety and welfare. Assigns and directly supervises the activities of a patrol shift. Performs patrol work and responds to calls for service. Reports to the Staff Sergeant.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:
Provides leadership and supervision to assigned subordinate officers engaged in the activities of the Patrol Division. Schedules, instructs, assigns, and reviews work, maintains standards, coordinates activities to include training, assisting with the selection of new employees, employee review process, allocating personnel, and acting on employee relations issues.
Takes active charge of all significant and/or major incidents until relieved by a higher-ranking officer.
Confers with officers regarding case problems; assists in the performance of the more difficult law enforcement work including special operations.
Inspects officers, vehicles, and equipment to ensure compliance with all regulations.
Participates in public/community relations efforts including preparing and giving public presentations to various groups and organizations, attending neighborhood/community meetings, and providing information on crimes and crime prevention methods.

Performs routine patrol duties, including but not limited to patrolling assigned areas of the City, monitoring property security, responding to emergency calls and/or public calls for assistance, apprehending and arresting suspects and violent persons, securing crime scenes, seizing property and/or criminal evidence, maintaining public orders, transporting prisoners and mental patients, completing police reports, and assisting other agencies and jurisdictions as needed.
Performs traffic enforcement duties including issuing traffic tickets and warnings, detecting DUI suspects, and assisting with accident reconstruction and investigations.
Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, we do not serve civil papers, and other official papers.
Administers first aid and assists EMTs at emergency scenes, as necessary.
Provides testimony and presents evidence in court as necessary; represents the City as a solicitor in prosecution and disposition of cases.

Coordinates and supervises department personnel in the maintenance of courtroom security for Municipal Court bench trials; serves as court bailiff as scheduled.
Coordinates and/or performs routine service duties including, but not limited to providing escort services for the protection of persons and/or property; assists stranded motorists, provides funeral escorts, directs traffic, provides security and crowd control at special events, etc.
Remains abreast of all federal and state laws and ordinances of the City of Georgetown; informs subordinates of any changes and ensures the implementation/enforcement of same.
Maintains required physical fitness and required level of proficiency in the use of firearms.
Creates a variety of documents including incident reports, accident reports, shift briefings/pass-on log, warrant preparations, uniform traffic tickets, arrest warrants, roll call reports, stat sheet, evaluations, Intel reports, and emails.
Refers to incident reports, TR-310 accident reports, warrant preparations, shift briefing report, DMV, NCIC, SC State Law, City ordinance, City-wide emails law updates, notes from meetings, verbal commands, and shift activity.

Operates a variety of machinery and/or equipment such as service vehicles, boats, golf carts, bicycles, radios, flashlights, Tasers, firearms, and SWAT vehicles. Utilizes a variety of tools and/or sets of tools to include firearms, Tasers, pepper spray, bolt cutters, various hand tools, and handcuffs.
Remains on-call 24 hours per day, seven days a week for emergency response.
Performs other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Vocational/Technical School Diploma supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years of experience in the policing and/or supervisory fields or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Valid South Carolina Driver's License.
Ability to use a firearm.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment. Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, running, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting, pushing, or pulling objects, and also involves exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and up to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. Must be able to defend oneself from assault and to restrain suspects of varying weights.
