San Diego State University Facilities Services is seeking an experienced and dependable Lead Custodian to provide lead direction to custodial staff while supporting the daily cleaning and maintenance of campus facilities. This role coordinates work assignments, monitors quality and safety standards, trains staff, and performs hands-on custodial work to maintain a clean and welcoming campus environment.

Responsibilities

  • →Daily Work Assignments & Oversight 
    • →Provide lead direction to 10–30 custodial employees, including assigning work, monitoring progress, and inspecting completed work for quality.
    • →Train staff on custodial equipment, cleaning procedures, safety practices, and emergency protocols.
    • →Maintain employee time records, provide input on performance evaluations, and coordinate custodial supply and equipment needs.
  • →Campus Building Maintenance 
    • →Perform and support custodial cleaning of classrooms, laboratories, offices, restrooms, and other campus spaces.
    • →Complete floor care, furniture and surface cleaning, trash removal, dusting, and replenishment of custodial supplies.
    • →Assist with minor custodial equipment repairs and ensure assigned areas meet cleanliness standards.
    • →Provide Porter service throughout the campus.
    • →Respond to urgent calls, bio cleanup, floods, etc.

  • Position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Wednesday – Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday & Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.,  but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

SDSU Facilities Services (FS), a department of Business and Financial Affairs, is a customer service-based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Facilities Services employs over 235 employees (full-time and students) and supports approximately eight million square feet of buildings (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land with an operating budget of approximately forty-five million dollars.

Equivalent to 1-2 years of related custodial experience and providing on-the-job training and leadership to others

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the methods, chemicals, and equipment used in custodial work 
  • Working knowledge of safety and sanitation practices and measures used in custodial work
  • Working knowledge of effective lead/supervisory practices and techniques
  • Graduation of high school or equivalent education and training
  • Completion of APPA Supervisor’s Toolkit or equivalent training
  • At least 5 years of work experience as a Custodian or an equivalent position
  • 3 or more years of experience leading or supervising employees
  • Working knowledge or general understanding of collective bargaining agreements
  • Previous experience maintaining wood flooring surfaces, vinyl composite tile, LVT, asbestos composite tile and carpet care.
