Public Safety Officer I

The PSO I is a non-sworn position that performs functions related to parking support including, but not limited to, patrolling of campus parking lots, enforcement of parking regulations, cash collection from permit dispensers and meters, signage and parking for special events, and maintenance and analysis of appropriate records.  Perform functions related to police support including, but not limited to, dispatching duties in the police communications center, processing police records, property and evidence control, customer services, maintenance of department equipment and fleet, completing non-emergent crime reports and providing assistance to the public.  Perform functions related to public safety services including, but not limited to, safety escorts, building and facility security, emergency phone testing and completing incident reports.  Perform other duties as assigned related to parking support, police support, and public safety services.

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid California Driver License.  This position requires vehicle operation, and continued employment is contingent upon maintaining the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and a safe driving record.

Incumbents must have the ability to independently respond and act quickly, accurately evaluate information and situations, and make appropriate decisions in routine, non-routine, and emergency situations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, and ability to handle sensitive situations with tach and confidentiality; ability to interpret and apply a variety of laws, rules, and regulations; ability to make effective decisions and judgments in emergency situations; ability to convey clear, concise communications and directions; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to act and resolve parking and traffic problems; ability to write standard incident and crime reports in a clear and concise manner; ability to observe and recall details and incidents, as well as detect and respond appropriately to potentially hazardous situations; ability to effectively interact with a wide range of individuals including the campus community and the general public; ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and confidentiality. Ability to successfully complete the POST basic dispatcher academy and CSUCI Police Department Communications Training Program related to public safety support and dispatch activities.

Essential qualifications require the ability to follow oral and written instructions, speak clearly and concisely, and effectively use the phonetic alphabet. Maintain composure in highly stressful situations or when dealing with difficult individuals. Ability to appropriately perform sales transactions, handle money, and operate basic computer systems. Ability to support the training for staff and the campus community.  Prior parking enforcement and/or dispatching experience preferred.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

The person holding this position is considered a ‘Campus Security Authority (CSA)’ to report crimes for the federally mandated Clery Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1107 revised March 24, 2017 as a condition of employment.

The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

Education Code 89521 Requirements: Applicants will be required to disclose whether they have received a final administrative decision or final judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last 7 years only after a determination is made that they meet the minimum qualifications for the position, and before an offer of employment is extended. Hiring Salary: $3,747 - $4,219 per month
