PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the carpentry trade area.\r\n
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard carpentry trade practices and codes;�\r\n Performs alterations, repairs and maintenance of structures and facilities;�\r\n Performs skilled bench work, operating with such equipment as power saws, jointers, wood lathes, planers, boring, sanding and mortising machines;�\r\n Builds and repairs cabinets;�\r\n Cleans, sharpens and repairs hand and bench tools;�\r\n Lays resilient flooring and Formica;�\r\n Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks;�\r\n Keeps necessary records;�\r\n In smaller trade areas may be the sole worker running a skilled trade area;�\r\n May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required;�\r\n May cut glass and glaze windows;�\r\n May fabricate signs;�\r\n May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts;�\r\n May operate heavy equipment;�\r\n May respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports;�\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
\r\n\r\n\r\n Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard carpentry trade practices;�\r\n Skills\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;�\r\n oral and written communication skills;�\r\n \r\n \r\n Ability to\r\n \r\n prepare estimates and keep shop records;�\r\n utilize computer software.\r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Four (4) years of experience in the�carpentry trade. \r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled carpentry trades. \r\nNOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
\r\n\r\n Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.\r\n Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.\r\n Experience performing technical duties within the carpentry trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.\r\n\r\n\r\n
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants with:\r\n\r\n\r\n Experience with snow removal\r\n Experience climbing ladders\r\n Experience lifting\r\n\r\n\r\n
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.\r\n At the University of Connecticut: Incumbents in this class must have graduated from a vocational or technical school with a diploma and/or official transcript designating completion of course work in carpentry or have equivalent postsecondary formal education from an accredited association or institution.\r\n\r\n\r\n
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
At state airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.\r\n
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.\r\n A physical examination may be required.\r\n\r\n\r\n
WORKING CONDITIONS
\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles; and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions and/or environmental conditions.\r\n The appointing authority may require completion of hazardous materials training such as asbestos, PCB, PFAS, consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class.\r\n\r\n\r\n
