A respirator fit test will be performed upon hire.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nTHE ROLE\r\nThe purpose of this position to perform electrical repairs, installation and maintenance the Department's traffic lights and highway illumination within the District 2.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nPOSITION REQUIREMENTS\r\nIn order to be selected for interview, candidates must:\r\n\r\n Possess formal electrical education, with proof of certification, and at least 2 years of working experience in the electrical field; please refer to the 'Preferred Qualifications' listed below.\r\n Candidates must indicate they hold a current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank endorsement in the 'Licenses and Professional Certifications' section of the application, or they will not be considered. Applicants invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, reflecting the 'tank endorsement,' and valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at time of interview.\r\n Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever his or her services are needed; to include mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. Various storm events will require employees to stay at work for the duration of the storm; which at times could be up to a period of several days, to include holidays and weekends.�\r\n Candidates must be willing to accept emergency duty assignments to include working at heights in a bucket truck on highways and secondary roads, performing high voltage repairs to highway lighting and traffic signals whenever your services are needed.\r\n Incumbents in this class will be required to have a 30-mile residency from the posted job location.\r\n Candidates will be required to bring a copy of their Master Application at the time of interview and a thoroughly completed Connecticut Department of Transportation Commercial Driver Supplement form (CTDOT-CDL-1).\r\n Candidates must show how they meet the required knowledge and experience on their application to proceed further in the hiring process. \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n ABOUT US\r\n As one of Connecticut’s largest State agencies, DOT employees approximately 3,000 individuals statewide in five distinct bureaus. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation and the Connecticut Airport Authority this class is accountable\r\nfor performing a variety of moderately skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadsides, roadways, bridges, airports, and other departmental facilities; operates and\r\nmaintains complex mechanical equipment; works as a moderately skilled mechanic in garages in the\r\nroutine repair of mechanical equipment.\r\n

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

\r\n\r\n\r\n Knowledge of\r\n \r\n the construction, maintenance, and repair techniques of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports;�\r\n the processes and materials used in the construction and maintenance trades;�\r\n \r\n \r\n Skills\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;�\r\n oral and written communication skills;�\r\n \r\n \r\n Ability to\r\n \r\n use and make routine repairs to complex mechanical equipment;�\r\n operate equipment as listed on the attached addendum;�\r\n understand and follow written and oral instructions;�\r\n utilize computer software.\r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in the construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing,\r\nmaintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges or airports, in work involving the operation\r\nand care of mechanical equipment or work in one of the recognized maintenance trades.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

\r\n\r\n Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of the\r\n subject requirements in one of the maintenance trades may be substituted for the General\r\n Experience.\r\n Successful completion of the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprenticeship Program approved by the Department of Administrative Services may be substituted for the General Experience.\r\n\r\n\r\n

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

\r\n Completion of an accredited electrical training program and provide proof of the certification.\r\n At least 2 years of working experience in the electrical field.\r\n Experience working with heights in a bucket truck.\r\n Experience working with high voltage repairs.\r\n Experience wiring basic electrical circuit.\r\n Meet the 30-mile residency requirement of the posted position.\r\n Experience with basic blueprint reading and interpretation.\r\n\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain\r\n appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.\r\n Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including\r\n snow and ice removal, whenever their services are required.\r\n\r\n\r\n

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

At state airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a\r\nthorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for\r\nappointment.\r\n

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and\r\n visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness in order to perform the duties of\r\n the class.\r\n A physical examination will be required.\r\n\r\n\r\n

WORKING CONDITIONS

\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class are exposed to extremes of weather conditions, to frequent lifting of\r\n heavy weights, to highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, including exposure to heights when\r\n working on bridges, to poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months, and to\r\n loud and potentially dangerous machinery.\r\n The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with\r\n EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may\r\n be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.\r\n\r\n\r\n
