Introduction

The Delaware Environmental Laboratory is a full-service lab that tests and assesses water, air, soil, hazardous materials, and biological samples. Summary Statement

This position resides in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Environmental Laboratory. This position will focus on activities associated with the microbiology, molecular ecology, and field services sections. This position will plan, conduct, and perform analyses that will produce technically sound and legally defensible data and will utilize information systems, create technical reports, troubleshoot and maintain instruments, develop Standard Operating Procedures and quality documents. Other duties include field sample collection, data review and approval, and maintaining laboratory certifications. All work to be completed in accordance with EPA, FDA, and NELAP standards.\r\n

Essential Functions

Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.\r\n\r\nPerforms microbiological examinations on a variety of clinical specimens in order to identify and detect the presence or absence of opportunistic or pathogenic microorganisms. \r\nPerforms quality control procedures. \r\nMaintains accurate records of test procedures and results of tests performed. \r\nPrepares reports of microbiological procedures performed. \r\nMay participate on special response teams, involving epidemics or medical emergencies.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Microbiologist I \r\nApplicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:\r\n\r\n Possession of an Associates degree or higher in Life or Physical Science or related field. \r\n Knowledge of laboratory procedures for preparation, isolation, identification or characterization of viruses, parasites, bacteria or metabolic disorders. \r\n Knowledge of applying Universal Safety Precautions for laboratories. \r\n Knowledge of analyzing and evaluating scientific data. \r\n Knowledge of technical report writing.\r\n\r\n
