Overview

DLH Corp. is looking for a Public Health Technical Writer to join our talented and innovative team supporting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA. This is a hybrid work environment based out of Atlanta. Teleworking most days with visits to the CDC campus for in-person meetings and office visits on an ad hoc basis.  

CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), the Division of HIV Prevention (DHP), is charged with preventing HIV infection and reducing the incidence of HIV-related illness and death. The overarching objectives of the contract held by DLH are to assist DHP in addressing its public health mission by providing data management, data governance, data analysis, and data dissemination support to strengthen the nationwide capacity to monitor the HIV epidemic. As such, DLH is seeking an Atlanta-based Technical Writer with the following skills:  

 Responsibilities

  • Writing technical, scientific, and consumer-focused HIV content for dissemination through a variety of channels including web pages and other digital channels.  
  • Writing and editing Dear Colleague Letters, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), technical documents, reports, and internal communication.  
  • Copy editing and content editing scientific and consumer-focused HIV products.   
  • Communicating via email, over the phone, and in person with Division staff, determining needs, and translating needs into well-produced products.   
  • Following writing/editing projects through all phases of development, including concept, research, development, clearance reviews, and production. 

  Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or a related field. 
  • Minimum of three years of experience with technical writing and/or scientific writing.  
  • Strong expertise in developing web/intranet content, public-facing fact sheets, and technical training materials utilizing federal Plain Language guidelines. 
  • Proven ability to navigate the rigorous scientific clearance processes and ensure all reports, dissemination of products, and digital content are strictly Section 508-compliant.  
  • Must have knowledge of principles and experience with clear communication, plain language, and writing for consumers. 
  • Must be able to meet deadlines. 
  • Must be self-starting and highly motivated. 
  • Must be able to work well alone and within a multidisciplinary team.  
  • Must have a meticulous approach to work and an eye for detail. 
  • Must be fluent in all academic style guides. 
  • Must provide corrections and suggestions in reference to grammar, spelling, document flow, punctuation, and usage. 
  • Must have excellent written English, including good spelling and grammar. 
  • Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or a related field. 
  • DHS/GSA Section 508 Certification (or equivalent accessibility training). 
  • Specialized training in scientific/medical writing (e.g., AMWA certification).  
  • Experience and knowledge of the subject of HIV and/or public health. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of Section 508 of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and how it applies to communication. 
  • Fluency in written Spanish.
