MANAGER, POLE LINE/DISTRIBUTION ENGINEERING
Build a strong team. Grow capability. Deliver great work consistently.
Why this Role
Encepta is growing our pole line / overhead distribution design practice across BC and AB. We're looking for a people-first leader who loves developing talent, building a healthy team culture, and creating the structure that helps great designers do their best work.
You'll lead a team of 10+ and focus on coaching, planning, resourcing, performance support, and continuous improvement while partnering with technical experts to ensure quality standards are met.
What You'll Be Responsible For
Reporting to senior leadership and working closely with project teams and clients. Your responsibilities will include:
- Lead and develop a team of 10+ (1:1s, coaching, feedback, recognition, performance management)
- Create clarity and structure: roles, expectations, priorities, workflows, and “how we work” norms
- Build a high-performing culture: psychological safety, accountability, learning, and ownership
- Support project delivery through planning, resourcing, and removing blockers (not doing all the technical work yourself)
- Drive hiring and onboarding: help attract talent, improve interviews, and build a strong ramp-up program
- Coordinate quality and consistency by ensuring the right reviews happen at the right times
- Partner with clients and internal stakeholders to align on timelines, risks, and expectations
- Champion continuous improvement: reduce rework, increase throughput, and strengthen team communication
What Success Looks Like
Within your first 12-18 months, you'll be:
- Leading your team of 10+ with regular 1:1s, targeted coaching, timely feedback, meaningful recognition, and effective performance management
- Establishing clear structure and rhythm that defines roles, sets expectations, prioritizes work, optimizes workflows, and normalizes how the team collaborates
- Creating smooth project delivery through proactive planning, smart resourcing, early blocker removal, and reduced rework across all assignments
- Building retention and engagement that strengthens onboarding programs, accelerates development through training, and fosters productive internal collaboration
- Delivering consistent client experiences with reliable communication, predictable quality standards, and aligned expectations on timelines and deliverables
What We're Looking For
- Leadership & People Management: Proven experience leading a team (formal manager or strong team lead with people accountability); skilled in coaching, feedback, conflict resolution, and performance management; comfortable setting direction, holding accountability, and building trust; strong communicator across different personality types, disciplines, and locations
- Delivery & Operations Mindset: Strong planning and prioritization skills across multiple projects and shifting deadlines; ability to build repeatable processes, dashboards, and team routines that scale; bias toward action with capability to identify problems early and remove blockers quickly
- Technical Context & Credibility: Experience in utility pole line/overhead distribution and familiarity with Western Canada standards; working knowledge of tools like AutoCAD and platforms such as SpidaCalc/PLS-CADD/QuickPole; able to guide technical decision-making and ensure appropriate reviews happen
- Educational Background: Degree or diploma in Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management, or related technical field OR equivalent combination of experience and training
- Work Experience: 5+ years in utility/infrastructure industries with at least 2-3 years in a people leadership or senior team lead capacity; experience managing teams of 10+ preferred
- Nice-to-Have: Experience with performance management systems, workforce planning tools, familiarity with utility safety standards and regulations, PMP or leadership certifications, experience in telecommunications or electric utility sectors
