About The Irish Family History Centre at EPIC 

Located on-site at EPIC,  The Irish Family History Centre (IFHC) is the world standard in Irish Genealogy. Over 70 million people can claim Irish ancestry today, but many of those descendants are in the dark about who those ancestors are.  Responsible for research into the Irish roots of Shania Twain, Tom Cruise and others, the IFHC has helped thousands of people discover more about their Irish Family History over the years, through our expert services.  Our dedicated genealogists can map out the Irish ancestors’ lives; creating a tangible connection to them through the ages - how they lived, worked and loved.


The Irish Family History Centre is currently seeking experienced applicants for the role of Expert Genealogist.


This role is part‑time, working 15 hours per week on a six‑month fixed‑term contract.



The Role – Part Time Genealogist – Irish Family History Centre at EPIC

Genealogy Experts are an integral part of our team, creating a unique experience for those seeking to discover and create their Irish family tree. This role requires expert knowledge of records and resources, a knowledge of Irish social history, and the delivery of excellent customer service.


The Irish Family History Centre Genealogy Experts will be involved in ensuring a smooth, efficient, professional and friendly experience for all customers. They will be required to conduct genealogy consultations in the Irish Family History Centre in the CHQ building, Dublin 1 


Responsibilities:

We are seeking a Genealogist to assist our visitors in researching, documenting and expanding their family trees. Working both in person and online, you will provide professional guidance, using a wide range of genealogical sources to help individuals discover their family history. The successful candidate will:

    • Provide genealogical consultations tailored to each visitor’s research goals. 
    • Research and document family history using a broad range of resources including:
      • Online data-bases such as Ancestry, Findmypast, and FamilySearch.
      • Irish vital records - Irishgenealogy.ie
      • Local histories, sources, books and archival material.
    • Interpret and analyse DNA test results and matches to support genealogical connections. 
    • Critically assess and validate existing online family trees, identifying potential errors or inconsistencies.
    • Develop and recommend customized search strategies to guide clients in continuing their own family history research.
    • Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity when handling personal or sensitive genealogical information


    Key Requirements:

    • Proven experience conducting genealogical research using a variety of sources including church records of all faith communities.
    • Proficiency with online research platforms and familiarity with Irish genealogical records.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with DNA data in a genealogical context.
    • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail when evaluating records and family trees.
    • Punctuality, reliability, and a warm, friendly personality are essential. and previous experience in a customer-facing role an advantage.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills - we're looking for a passion for visitor engagement.
    • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
    • Flexibility to work a rota-based schedule (the IFHC operates 7 days a week and on Public Holidays).
    • A degree in History or an adjacent subject (Anthropology, Folklore, etc.), or a qualification in genealogy will be an advantage.
