ONE (1) POST DOCTORAL RESEARCHER POSITION AT THE RESILIENT SOCIETY DEPARTMENT

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (www.eratosthenes.org.cy) of Cyprus University of Technology (www.cut.ac.cy) invites applications for one (1) position at the Post Doctoral Researcher level at the Resilient Society Department of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence. The position is open either on a full-time (100%) or part-time employment basis. The successful candidate will work under Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence project entitled “Bridging Research with Public Administration: Cooperation between EOA Limassol and the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence on European and National Projects” funded by Limassol District Local Government Organisation and any other project the organization deems necessary.

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is an autonomous Centre of Excellence with Cyprus University of Technology as its sole stakeholder, specialising in earth observation, space technology and geospatial analysis. Cyprus University of Technology has more than 17-years experience in earth observations and geospatial analysis. Through the ‘EXCELSIOR’ H2020 Teaming Project (https://excelsior2020.eu/), ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aspires to become a Digital Innovation Hub for Earth Observation and Geospatial Information by offering knowledge, responsible research, open innovation and application services capable of sustaining Cyprus’ development. ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aspires to actively contribute to the European Research Area (ERA) priorities in Atmosphere and Climate, Resilient Societies and Big Earth Data Analytics, as well as to become the reference Earth Observation/Geoinformation Centre for research and innovation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa (EMMENA) region.

A core activity of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence is to conduct high caliber, state-of-the-art research, both basic and applied. A central task is to acquire research funding for the Centre, to provide facilities to the researchers, and to support them to acquire funding for their research independently and via international and local collaborations. Collaborations with industrial partners are particularly encouraged and facilitated.

Brief Description of the project

The collaboration between EOA Limassol and the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence aims to strengthen joint efforts in smart water management, environmental monitoring, Earth Observation and digital transformation through specialised research and innovation support. The researcher will contribute to pilot activities, technical studies and research projects, support the preparation of national and European funding proposals, engage with stakeholders and public authorities, and promote the transfer of scientific knowledge into operational practice. Overall, this collaboration will enhance both organisations’ capacity to adopt data-driven solutions, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen their participation in research and innovation initiatives at national and European level.
The minimum requirement for the position of PostDoc Researcher is a Doctoral degree from a recognised university.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be placed in the Resilient Society Department of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, and will work primarily on the implementation of the collaboration project between ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence and the Limassol District Local Government Organisation, “Bridging Research with Public Administration: Cooperation between EOA Limassol and the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence on European and National Projects” and any other project the organization deems necessary, by fulfilling the following tasks: 

  • Conducting applied research on water resources management, urban water systems, water quality monitoring, and environmental sustainability. 
  • Developing methodologies and decision-support tools that integrate Earth Observation data, in-situ measurements, GIS information and operational datasets from EOA Limassol.
  • Supporting the design and implementation of digital solutions for monitoring water infrastructure, water losses, environmental pressures and climate-related risks.
  • Processing, analysing and interpreting environmental, hydrological, geospatial and Earth Observation datasets.
  • Contributing to the preparation of technical studies, scientific reports, policy briefs and project deliverables.
  • Supporting the implementation of pilot actions and demonstration activities in collaboration with EOA Limassol departments and other stakeholders.
  • Participating in field campaigns, environmental monitoring activities and data collection exercises.
  • Assisting in the development of research proposals and funding applications under European, national and regional programmes.
  • Disseminating project results through scientific publications, conference presentations, workshops, stakeholder meetings and public engagement activities.
  • Supporting capacity-building activities and knowledge transfer between research organisations, local authorities and other stakeholders.
  • Assisting in the coordination and management of project activities, timelines, deliverables and reporting obligations.
  • Establishing and strengthening collaborations with local, national and international research and innovation networks.
  • Mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students involved in project activities.
  • Participating in meetings organised by ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, EOA Limassol and project partners.
  • Working towards the fulfilment of the strategic objectives of both ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence and EOA Limassol.
  • Undertaking any other relevant duties deemed necessary for the successful implementation of the project.
Qualifications

  1. PhD in Environmental Science, Water Science and Technology, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  2. MSc in Environmental Science, Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  3. BSc in Environmental Science and Technology, Civil Engineering, Geology or a closely related discipline.
  4. Proven experience in water resources management, environmental monitoring, water quality assessment, water treatment technologies, environmental sustainability or related fields.
  5. Experience in analyzing and interpreting environmental datasets and preparing scientific and technical reports.
  6. Experience participating in national and/or European research and innovation projects.
  7. Experience in proposal writing and securing research funding.
  8. Experience in stakeholder engagement, participatory processes or collaboration with public authorities.
  9. Experience in project coordination, management and preparation of project deliverables.
  10. Proven scientific publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  11. Knowledge of programming and data analysis tools such as R, Python, MATLAB or similar platforms.
  12. Experience in Earth Observation, remote sensing, GIS and spatial data analysis would be beneficial
  13. Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  14. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  15. Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  16. Excellent command of Greek and English language, both written and oral.
  17. Willingness to travel within Cyprus and abroad for project meetings, field activities and conferences.
The appointment will be for a period of one year (12 months) with the prospect of renewal for another one year. The annual gross salary for the (full-time) position will range from €36,732.10 to €52,908.42, depending on qualifications. It is noted that there is provision for 13th salary (the cost of the 13th salary is proportionally incorporated in the monthly remuneration).
