## Join our Team About this opportunity: Radio Access Network (RAN) functions have stringent requirements on performance, availability, and resilience. Restarting a RAN application to update a shared library can interrupt ongoing services. Dynamic Software Updating (DSU) enables shared libraries to be upgraded while the application continues running. However, stateful libraries also maintain protocol contexts, allocated resources, timers, statistics, caches, thread-local data, and references to application objects. This state must be preserved or migrated to avoid interrupted sessions, performance degradation, or loss of service. This master thesis will investigate how a stateful shared library can be safely upgraded at runtime, including state migration, compatibility, concurrent access, bounded service interruption, failure handling, and rollback. What you will do: * Investigate and compare current research in runtime library updates and state migration * Can state be migrated while the application continues processing? (Investigate different type of states. State to be identified, captured, serialized, and restored. Detect incompatible state and do rollback. Impact on programmer and level of automation in migration.) * Prototype and showcase one or more ways to update a shared library with state migration for a program in runtime * Investigate impact on RAN functions (time to upgrade, implementation complexity, security risks, state handling, how to detect incompatible state and rollback, time to upgrade, …) The skills you bring: * Master´s student in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or a related field. * You have an interest in operating systems, software updating, distributed systems, or runtime systems. * You have knowledge of programming in C/C++ or a similar systems programming language.
