Field Operating Engineer

Provides technical maintenance and repair for Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)-owned mechanical and electrical equipment with major responsibility for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems.

This job requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity to perform all tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must adhere to all site safety regulations and may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel. There may be exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, heavy equipment, moving machinery, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises. This job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., periodically lifting/moving up to 50 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 100 lbs. alone or with assistance.

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
• One (1) year of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems.
• Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
• May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
• Knowledge of HVAC operating systems equipment, tools, and procedures used in the operation, maintenance, and repair.
• Mechanical ability.
• Ability to inspect, diagnose problems, and make repairs or request appropriate mechanics to perform the repairs.
• Ability to maintain logs and write reports.

1. Assists school-based operating engineers in the preventive maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment and systems to ensure all units are operating properly and preventive maintenance requirements take place within the proper PM cycle.
2. Completes various ad-hoc assignments at various locations for various durations of time.
3. Collaborates with school-based operating engineers on large preventive or corrective maintenance projects involving HVAC or mechanical/electrical equipment.
4. Adjusts, services, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance and filter replacement on all HVAC equipment to ensure optimum efficiency of operation.
5. Performs or assists with emergency heating and air-conditioning work as required.
6. May work with facilities management staff in regular or emergency situations.
7. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
