Legal Director, Commercial

The Fastly Legal team is looking for a Commercial Legal leader, deal lawyer and lifelong learner to join our dynamic team as our first in-region attorney leading Commercial Legal for our growing APJ business. This foundational Legal hire will be the initial in-region legal presence for our APJ business, acting as a trusted partner to APJ leadership, exercising independent judgment across a range of legal matters, helping guide the regional legal support infrastructure and acting as a bridge between a fast-moving, expanding APJ business and global Legal and cross-functional leadership.

Ideal candidates have strong foundational law firm training, extensive experience supporting in-house APJ enterprise sales and channel teams, experience with legal issues relevant to CDN, Security or other B2B SaaS models, and an interest in helping build our regional legal presence and taking on additional responsibilities.

This position is open to candidates based in Singapore, where Fastly’s APJ headquarters is located, and reports to the Associate General Counsel of Commercial Legal (based in the US).

• Serve as primary dedicated legal partner to APJ GTM leadership, Deal Desk and cross-functional stakeholders in Security, Product and Finance on APJ commercial legal matters
• Serve as the first point of legal contact for APJ business issues: apply sound judgment to triage matters, efficiently resolving commercial legal matters, and demonstrating sound judgment around when to escalate to global legal leadership or engage cross-functional specialists
• Partner with the global Commercial Legal team on APJ regionalization of Commercial Legal contract templates, fallback positions and negotiation playbooks
• Partner with the global Product, Regulatory and Technology Legal team to ensure Commercial Legal agreements and other GTM work complies with APJ AI, IP, privacy and other regulatory frameworks 
• Provide negotiation and other forms of mentorship to global Commercial Legal team members

• Lead and close complex MSA, DPA and partnership agreements with enterprise customers and channel partners across APJ
• Independently draft, review, and negotiate other agreements to support the APJ business, including infrastructure and various vendor agreements 

• Qualified to practice law in Singapore 
• 12+ years of combined law firm and in-house experience, with at least 5 years of in-house experience at a B2B technology company operating in APJ markets focused on revenue-generating commercial transactions
• Deep experience negotiating to successful and timely closure APJ enterprise cloud, infrastructure, SaaS sales and partnership agreements 
• Experience leading regional APJ legal support for GTM organizations, keeping pace with regional commercial support of new product launches and a steady volume of commercial transactions in a fast-paced, high-growth environment 
• Expertise with commercial legal implications of AI, IP, data privacy and other regulatory frameworks in APJ

• Business-level Japanese language proficiency preferred (sufficient to review Japanese-language contracts, communicate with Japanese enterprise customers, partners and other counterparties, and understand customary practices and other nuance in deal negotiations)
• Exceptional written and spoken English required, along with strong “plain language” written and verbal communication skills

• Established track record of effective executive presence and interpersonal cross-functional credibility. You will regularly partner with APJ senior leaders, global counterparts and external parties at a senior engagement level
• Skilled at working independently and proactively executing without requiring close supervision. This role requires sound judgment in proactively identifying business needs, building trust and integrating with the business, and being comfortable working with colleagues in different offices and locations
• Demonstrated ability to distinguish issues that require escalation to global legal leadership and other cross-functional experts from those that can be efficiently resolved independently 
• Excellent analytical and communication skills; strong attention to detail and clean, error-free execution
• Commercial, practical and business-enabling strategic growth mindset: leading with thoughtful prioritization of enabling business outcomes
• Resilient, curious, adaptable and energized by building within ambiguity and anticipating regulatory, technological and commercial changes. As a foundational legal leader, you will be asked to build structure and efficiently execute where established legal precedent may be unclear or developing
• Team-oriented mindset, high business acumen and a commitment to business enablement as the foundation for commercial legal success

• Experience in the CDN and/or security industry
• Experience partnering with GTM to build out APJ channel sales programs for enterprise SaaS, especially referral, reseller, distributor and MSP programs
• Curiosity about how the internet really works and enthusiasm for technology
• Additional APJ language skills

• This position will require you to be available during core business hours.

Fastly currently embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles which allows employees flexibility to split their time between the office and home.
