Job Title: Facilities Maintenance Worker
Reports To: Operations Director (or designee)
Location: San Francisco
Compensation: $25-27 hourly, depending on experience, plus an excellent benefits package
Classification: Non-exempt, full-time position (.8 FTE), and 30 hrs/wk
Schedule: Monday-Friday evenings, daily schedule split between two centers, with occasional weekends for events

Position Summary:
The Facilities Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming facilities for participants, staff, and visitors across two San Francisco locations. This position supports the day-to-day operations of the facilities by performing custodial and maintenance tasks in accordance with established safety standards. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and flexible, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine cleaning and sanitation of classrooms, offices, restrooms, common areas, and high-touch surfaces across two locations using established safety procedures and environmentally responsible practices for educational and program environments.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and perform general custodial tasks to maintain clean, orderly, and safe facilities in compliance with health and safety standards, while ensuring a professional and welcoming environment.
  • Clean and maintain walls, windows, and surfaces, including vents, ceiling fans, light fixtures, baseboards, windowsills, and other hard-to-reach areas, to support a sanitary, well-maintained, and allergen-reduced environment.
  • Collect, sort, and dispose of trash, recycling, compost, and other waste materials in accordance with organizational procedures, including setting out bins on scheduled pickup days.
  • Complete end-of-day closing checklist to ensure all areas are clear and secure; lights and appliances are turned off; windows, doors, and gates are locked; and alarms are properly set.
  • Stock, replenish, maintain, and safely store custodial supplies, equipment, and tools; monitor inventory levels and identify replenishment needs to ensure facilities remain fully supplied and operational, including restroom paper products, soap, hand sanitizer, trash bags, cleaning products, and other custodial consumables.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections and complete assigned checklists to identify safety concerns, ensure spaces are secure, and verify readiness for daily operations.
  • Monitor building conditions, report maintenance and repair needs, and perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance tasks within the scope of the position.
  • Assist with room setup and breakdown for meetings, programs, special events, and deliveries, including loading and unloading materials as needed.
  • Complete assigned duties within established timeframes while adhering to organizational quality standards, policies and procedures, safety protocols, applicable regulatory requirements, and the proper handling of cleaning chemicals and equipment to prevent accidents, injury, and exposure.
  • Support a positive, professional, and customer-focused environment by responding promptly to custodial needs, collaborating with staff, and contributing to the overall upkeep of facilities.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required; custodial certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of custodial or janitorial experience, preferably in educational or child-centered environments.
  • Ability to travel between assigned work locations as an essential function of the role; work is split between two centers approximately 3 miles apart.
  • Ability to maintain a regular evening schedule, with flexibility to adjust hours during agency closures, holidays, school breaks, special events, or other operational needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, sufficient to follow instructions and perform job duties safely.
  • Physical ability to perform cleaning tasks, including lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and other physical requirements as outlined in the Physical Demands section below this job description.
  • Knowledge of environmentally and health-conscious cleaning methods, chemicals, and procedures.
  • Ability to follow established safety practices, identify potential hazards, and take appropriate action while performing custodial duties.

  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and experience working effectively with diverse communities
  • Maintain confidentiality, discretion, sound judgment, and adherence to professional ethics
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, attention to detail, flexibility, and verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative and contribute to team goals, and attend required meetings, trainings, and workshops
  • Maintains required certifications (e.g., CPR/First Aid, Mandated Reporter, Pesticide training), follows safety and ergonomic practices, and ensures up-to-date background clearance, health screening clearance, and vaccinations

Work Environment:
This position operates in a professional office environment that includes classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, staff lounges, kitchens, and other program spaces. Work is performed on-site and requires regular movement throughout assigned facilities, both indoors and outdoors. This role routinely uses standard cleaning and maintenance equipment, including mops, brooms, vacuums, floor care machines, cleaning chemicals and dispensing systems, ladders or step stools, trash and recycling carts, and other related tools and personal protective equipment as required. Work is scheduled Monday through Friday, with occasional evening or weekend work to support community events, and requires travel between multiple assigned work sites.

Physical Demands:
The role involves frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, talking, listening, kneeling, crouching, bending, reaching, climbing, pushing, pulling, and lifting materials and equipment, and may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, dirt, odors, waste materials, and varying indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the use of standard cleaning tools and equipment and frequent repetitive motions. The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds as needed.

Vaccination Requirements:
All employees are expected to be fully vaccinated for MMR, Tdap, TB, COVID, etc, which includes current/available booster shots.
