We are seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Medical History Abstractor to join our growing GI Associates team!

This position plays an important behind-the-scenes role in supporting patient care by reviewing, organizing, and entering medical history information for upcoming appointments and procedures.

The ideal candidate enjoys working independently, has strong attention to detail, and thrives in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Experience with medical terminology, transcription, or medical records is highly valued!

 

Responsibilities

  • Enters medical data into electronic medical records for upcoming clinic appointments with providers from paper charts, current records from other providers, and previously scanned records. Assures information required to successfully measure and report care quality measures are properly documented.
  • Transcribes dictation for providers as needed. Transcribes letters, reports, and other materials for providers and nursing staff in a timely manner with a high degree of accuracy using word processing and dictation equipment.
  • Adds codes for all medical conditions with ICD-10 codes, and procedures and diagnostic tests with CPT codes.
  • Processes outgoing US mail accurately and efficiently. Maintains the postage meter, package mailings, and related postal and shipment items.
  • Updates deceased patient charts.
  • Updates EPIC chart with appropriate recall status for patient procedures.
  • Proofreads documents for errors.
  • Responds to electronic tasks in a timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

  • Education
    • High School diploma or equivalent required.
    • Diploma or Associate Degree in medical transcription, medical secretary, or other relevant medical field required, or equivalent experience.
  • Licensure/Certification
    • n/a
  • Experience
    • Minimum of one to three years of medical transcription experience preferred; hospital transcription experience highly preferred.
    • Working knowledge of ICD and CPT coding.

 

  • Knowledge
    • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Skills
    • Efficient typing skills with a high level of accuracy.
    • Possesses interpersonal, communication, and listening skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with patients, physicians, and all staff members.
    • Proficient computer skills working in an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Microsoft Word and Excel.
    • Demonstrates professionalism and respect in all forms of communication and correspondence.
  • Abilities
    • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of health information.
    • Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and cope with rapidly changing demands while working as a team member.
    • Ability to efficiently read and understand medical records and analyze pertinent information.
